Stage 1’s TT saw Jordan Giles as the only man sub 20 mins on the rolling course through Devon’s Ruby Country. Pre race favourite and last year’s winner Oli Hurdle was 2nd with James Mckay from Cycling Sheffield continuing his run of impressive form in 2023 to take 3rd.

The promised rain largely held off in the morning and by the 2nd road stage in the afternoon on the Jacobstowe circuit, the riders were treated to a beautiful spring afternoon with blazing sunshine – a most unexpected bonus. A group of two riders, Felix Whetter a 1st year U23 from the promoting Mid Devon Club and Charlie Beake got clear on lap 3 and were soon joined by Beake’s teammate Oscar Hutchings and Thomas Heal.

Over the next laps riders tried to get across the gap which by lap six, had gone up to 90 secs. Beake suffered a mechanical issue and with the hot sun tiring them, the three escapees were finally brought back on the final lap by a small group who had clipped off the front of the bunch. This group of 10 contested the sprint into the finishing drag into Hatherleigh with Ross Fawcett from Orwell Velo taking an impressive victory and the 15 bonus seconds. Daniel McDermott from Moonglu took 2nd and 10 secs with Mckay from Sheffield taking the final crucial 5 second bonus.

Lining up at Paigntons Velopark for the final criterium stage on Sunday to commemorate Club Legend Colin Lewis who died last year. Hurdle was 3 secs ahead of Mckay with McDermott a further 3 secs back. After around 20 minutes, a group of four including Stage 2 winner Ross Fawcett who was one minute back on GC, formed a breakaway and quickly had a minute gap back to the main field.

Stolen Goat worked tirelessly to try and bring the break back but struggled to make much impact for a long time as the group of four worked well together. Fawcett was virtual GC leader, the other riders, Nick Makin a 1st year Junior from Mid Devon, Steve Jones from Team Tor and James Bevan from Trainsharp still had 45 secs lead with 5 laps to go and were guaranteed to contest the win.

Mckay finally broke away with Cameron Mclaren to try and gap the Yellow Jersey and by the finish they had brought back the escapees to 14 seconds! Bevan from Trainsharp took the win from Mid Devons Makin who came 2nd. Fawcett who fought valiantly for the overall win came in 3rd. McKay held off the bunch by 5 secs to take the overall classification. Hurdle was 2nd on GC with McDermott 3rd. 1st Junior was Henry Howells from Mid Devon with a breakthrough ride for 16th on GC.

Despite a reduced field for 2023, we had some excellent racing and we thank all participants and helpers. Planning for 2024 already :)
