News: 2023 British National Road Series

SUMMARY:

2023: The Men have 10 National Series event days plus the Tour Series events and the British road championships (3 events) as well as the CiCLE Classic. The UCI teams should get a ride in the Tour of Britain which adds another 8 race days to their calendar.

2023: The Women have 10 National Series event days plus the Tour Series events and the British road championships (3 events) as well as two UCI stage races for UCI teams given a ride in those races.

The big question will be how many National B races there will be in 2023 – the first is the Perfs Pedal on February 12. Early season there are a number of long running races that are prestigious events in their own right outside of the National Series calendar. Fingers crossed we see them return for 2023.

THE ROAD SERIES

Contested over four rounds for men and five rounds for women, the National Road Series kicks off at the ANEXO/CAMS 7th Women’s CiCLE Classic in the East Midlands, with previous winners including Josie (2022) and Emily Nelson, Abi Smith, Neah Evans and Katie Archibald. The day also sees the Junior Men’s event held.

Podium for the 2023 Women’s Cicle Classic: L-R: Maddie Leech (2nd), winner Josie Nelson and third Eluned King

The series then returns to Lincoln for the iconic Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix, for the opening round of the men’s series and second round of the women’s. The 2023 edition will see a new organiser take over the reins of the prestigious race, following the departures of Dan Ellmore and Peter Odam, who have been integral to the running of the race over recent years and bringing the national championships to the city in 2015 and 2021. Gary Coltman takes over the time consuming work of the organising of a Monuments in the National Series.

2023 Lincoln GP Podium  Men L-R: Ben Perry (2nd), Luke Lamperti (winner) and Finn Crockett (3rd)

2023 Lincoln GP Podium Women L-R: Alice McWilliam (2nd), Becky Storrie (winner) and Jessie Carridge

The riders will then have a two month gap between National Series road events before they take to the start line for the Lancaster Grand Prix on Sunday 16 July and then a month later the Ryedale Grasscrete Grand Prix in Yorkshire on Sunday 20 August. Series champions will then be crowned in the North East on Sunday 17 September, with the Beaumont Trophy for men and Curlew Cup for women.

British Cycling is actively working to secure an additional round for the men’s National Road Series and will share further updates in due course. Unfortunately, the Manx International Stage Race on the Isle of Man will not take place in 2023 due to roadworks taking place on the island, but we look forward to welcoming the race back to the calendar in 2024.

Lancaster GP Men’s Podium L-R: Jacob Scott (2nd), Rob Scott (Winner) and Sam Culverwell  (3rd)

Winner of the 2022 men’s National Road Series for WiV SunGod, Robert Scott, said: “The National Series was great to be a part of this year. All the races felt very well organised and hopefully the British racing scene can build on the success of the series going into next year. It was a success for myself and the team winning the overall standings, and my standout events were Lancaster Grand Prix and Lincoln Grand Prix, even though I did end up in a ditch!”

Lancaster Women’s GP Podium L-R: Alex Morrice (2nd);  Mary Wilkinson (winner) and Sammie Stuart  (3rd)

CIRCUIT RACES
The National Circuit Series for men and women will begin in Otley (Wednesday 28 June) following the British Road Championships, before returning to Ilkley a few days later on Friday 30 June. The Sheffield Grand Prix will make a welcome return to the 2023 men’s calendar and will also host a women’s race before the men’s series will head to Colne on Tuesday 25 July. Both the men’s and women’s series champions will then be crowned in Newark on Friday 28 July.

Podium for the Santini Women’s Race at Otley – L-R: Jenny Holl (2nd);  Charlotte Broughton (winner); Emma Jeffers (3rd) with Santini’s man in the UK Jon Sagan (0789 6810 839)

As has been the case since 2017, equal prize money will be on offer in both the men’s and women’s road and circuit series, and further details on the location of the 2023 national championships for road, time-trial and circuit – which will take place from 22-25 June – will be published in due course.

Winner of the 2022 women’s National Road Series for CAMS-Basso Bikes, Sammie Stuart, said: “It was incredible to win the National Road Series – it felt like cycling complete for me! It’s tough as I work full-time as a firefighter as well so to find the time to train and get to races can be difficult, but it makes it all worth it to get the results. The people in the sport and in my team are great and I’m so glad to have found cycling.”

“It was my first year properly racing and it’s been a dream to race with the team in the series. I loved racing Lancaster Grand Prix as that’s like home to me, and it felt amazing to podium there. There’s lots of pressure that comes with wearing the leader’s jersey, but I’d rather go for it and retain it. I’m looking forward to racing in 2023 and to just keep enjoying cycling.”

Grasscrete Ryedale GP Women’s Podium L-R: Mary Wilkinson (2nd); Abi Smith (winner) and Danielle Shrosbree (3rd)

Grasscrete Ryedale GP Men’s Podium L-R: Jack Rootkin-Gray (2nd); Alexandar Richardson (winners) and Jacob Scott (3rd)
