Bike riding in Spain with Cycling Holiday Spain

Training camp after training camp is being held in Spain right now and riders outside of the pro teams can get pro team style support thanks to Nozad and his family at the Cycling Holiday Spain in the Calpe region of South West Spain.

Nozad writes about a recent day at the resort … Today we decided to ride a 128 km from our base and it was going to be an epic day of climbing with four climbs and a lot of lumpy sections. At 8.30am we all sat down for breakfast excited at the route that lied ahead. After discussing options the previous night, we thought we would start the week with a cracker, 128km with a hell of a lot of climbing. Well…why not that’s what we are here for.

A hearty breakfast of porridge, poached eggs on toast fruit and plenty of fresh coffee would prepare us for what was to come. Jubi had prepared some home made flapjacks and super tasty rice cakes which we loaded up, sorted bikes and started the ride under glorious blue skies.

The first climbs to Guadalest and further on to the Puerto de Confrides is around 25km ..that’s a fairly long climb to start but we set off steady and ramped it up towards the top with the last 5km fairly tasty . …this was going to be a tough day was what was ringing around in my mind. They guys with me,  who are regular clients, have somehow notched it up a level and are going well!

Next, a wonderful long decent on bone dry roads. Nice and fast for around 10km took us to the rear side of the Sierra Ataina often used by the pros during la Vuelta Espana. Here we bump into the pro team Cofidis and sit in behind them, listening to them chat away as I’m trying to hide my deep breathing which was only makingit worse! We reached the top all together and as Cofidis flew straight over, we thankfully took a immediate right and descended 5km in the direction of Benifallim.

From here to Castel de Castels ,it’s hill after hill for around 40km and it just empties your legs. The day did get better as during an incredible decent down to the bottom of the Col de Rates, we hooked onto another pro team and who was there but Julian Alaphilppe with Team Quickstep. We managed to sprint onto the back of the team and ride around 15km with them so fast it was amazing. They were also sprinting through and off at the front. It was incredible to see.

We had done a lot of the route by now fueled up on Jubi’s flapjacks and rice cakes. One last super climb to go, the Col de rates. A 6 km at 6%. A lovely climb. Here we saw so many pros including Quickstep, ,Cofidis, Arkea, Ag2R, UAE.  It was fantastic but the icing on the cake was seeing Tadej Pogacar at the top chatting and taking about what climb and KOM he was going to get!

Next for us, it was mainly descending all the way down Tarbena on one of the most fun descents here with hairpins and fantastic flowing sections. All in all, another fantastic day at Cycling Holiday Spain.  When we got back, Jubi had a post ride shake at the retreat for us and a lovely post ride lunch. Shortly after, we all used the spa/sauna and got a much needed massage by Diana.

The three course meal for the evening was pumpkin soup chicken paella and Apple Crumble and to top it off we put a fab movie on in the cinema, the one where you can’t make a sound! It was actually very quiet as we were all tired out and well stuffed!!
