Friday: British Circuit Race Championships

For the first time in the Road Championship’s history, the four days will see the Circuit Race Championship added to the Time Trial and Road Race Championships on a tight twisty circuit, in the DARK!

Friday: British Circuit Race Championships

15th October | Lincoln Historic Quarter

This is the first time in the UK the National Circuit Championship has been held as part of the National Road Championships. Expect fast and furious action on this short, tight and twisty 900m circuit around Lincoln Castle and finishing on the same finish line as the iconic Lincoln Grand Prix outside Lincoln’s icons, the Castle and Cathedral.

The hour long races will be held at night in the dark under floodlights on cobbled streets with all sorts of challenges for the riders such as tight corners, chichanes, speedhumps and cobbles. The Men’s race sees a very strong line up. Joey Walker will be defending the title he won in 2019 before the pandemic but there is a lot of riders wanting that title to wear in events like the Tour Series and Elite Circuit Series in 2022.

The rider list for the Men has some serious talent in the race and there is no guarentee the jersey will be seen in Britain in 2022 with the likes of Lewis Askey, Ethan Hayter, Charlie & Harry Tanfield, Owain Doull and Joe Pidcock in amongst the entry. The strength of the race is insane with the GB Academy riders, Wales Academy riders who made such an impact in the Tour Series, runner up in 2019 Isaac Mundy and Matt Bostock who in 2019 was proving to unbeatable in so many crits.

Like the Men’s race, the Women’s race has some names on the entry list we haven’t seen in a British crit for a while. Hannah Barnes who I remember winning them when she was still only 15! Josie Nelson was on fire in the Women’s Tour and has wins to her name in Belgian Kermesses whilst other names that stand out are Abi Smith and Leah Dixon. There are though many other domestic based riders capable of mixing it at the front. Riders such as Monica Greenwood, Jo Tindley, Charlotte Berry, Corinne Side, Beth Morrow, Lucy Gadd, Eluned King, Lucy Lee, Danielle Shrosbree, Connie Hayes and Jessica Finney. And others!

THE COURSE

How cool is this! A Crit championship around a castle!

The start/finish area … awesome! Takes me back to Beverley in East Yorkshire and the start/finish there on cobbles. Right and Left here with the finish in the middle! The start of 900 metres of utter concentration for an hour!

From Bailgate, left in Westgate and a pretty narrow pinch point … take a look at Streetview for a great example of that!

After Westgate comes Union street at the back of the Castle and speed bumps ….

There are some wider roads which if the cars are gone, should allow some moving up room

Into Drury Lane which will lead the riders into the Castle square again to start another lap.
