The Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider Fabio Jakobsen says he feels increasingly like a professional cyclist now that he can cycle with his teammates. “Now I am back on my bike, I cycle with my teammates again. Not all the time, because sometimes I take an early exit to the hotel. It’s slow, but I feel like a professional cyclist more and more. The whole team has been very supportive throughout the process. That gives me enormous motivation.”

The Dutch rider was asked how he is doing now. “Not so good compared to August 4 (before he crashed), compared to August 6 (the day after his horrifying accident) very good. In February, I have to have surgery again, then we will see how it goes. One or two months later I should be able to race again. If there are complications, it will take a little longer.”

“The fall was one of the worst experiences of my life, just like the weeks after. To be here with the team now makes me very happy. This squad is like a family. We take time for each other, we look after each other, and you could say that we even love each other.”

Zdeněk Štybar is thrilled to see where Jakobsen currently stands. “Nobody would have thought that he would be at this level now,” said the teammate of the Dutch sprinter. “Of course I don’t want to put any pressure on him, but I – and actually everyone – believes he can get back to the same level as before.”
