When looking back at his many memories in the sport, one Golden memory stands out for sprinter and tandem pilot Barney Storey

Best of Memories: Gold for Barney Storey

Tandem Kilometre TT – London 2012

Barney writes … Being able to say you competed in a home Games is rare, but winning a gold medal in one (partnering Neil Fachie) was something else! I remember the final moments before we set off, getting set in the start gate, it genuinely felt like a training session.

I wasn’t thinking about the 6000 people watching! After the start, I don’t remember much until the final 1/2 lap. The roar was deafening. You couldn’t hear yourself breath, then the noise level went up again when we posted the fastest time. At a big event you always hope everything works perfectly! it did! Form, bikes, and the pairing on the tandem. The day was made even better by Sarah winning in the afternoon. A day to cherish!”

Barney’s brother, Andy (boss at Prendas), adds a few words saying “To see Barney take Gold in London was incredible. The atmosphere in the velodrome was electric and the London Games certainly felt like a turning point for Para sport with full venues, huge support and an every increasingly knowledgeable fan base. Of course, as his brother and a member of his family, I got to see all of the effort it took for every one of those 1000 metres. And that made it all the sweeter.
