113 riders from as far as London took to the start of the 2020 Magnificent 7 which forms part of a month long festival of the outdoors in Sheffield.

Report/Results: Magnificent 7
113 riders from as far as London took to the start of the 2020 Magnificent 7 which forms part of a month long festival of the outdoors in Sheffield. The full route covered 28 miles and climbed nearly 4,000ft over 7 competitive closed road hill climbs. The unique event, now in its fifth year, consisted of senior men, veteran men and women all rewarded by scoring points based on their finishing positions over each finish lines around the steepest streets of Sheffield. The early spring weather was very kind given the poor forecast. The roads were wet to start but finished with brightening skies but still a strong breeze blew. Climbs ranged from short, sharp twenty percent bursts to long draggy climbs over 1.6 kilometres which finished at a high point over Bradfield allowing riders to enjoy the views over the outdoor city.
 
The pairing of Kieron Savage and Joe Clark riding for Cycling Sheffield were challenged this year with the presence of Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy riders Graham Briggs and Ali Slater. The first climb was a long one and a select bunch sprinted for the first win. Defending men’s champion Savage came into the final few hundred metres neck and neck with Slater, Andrew Nichols, Lifting Gear Products / Cycles in Motion and Holohan Coaching rider, Kirk Vickers but it was the Slater who took maximum points on climb 1 with Savage 2nd and Nichols in 3rd in a very close finish.
Savage bounced back on climb 2 with a win on the very steep but technical Waller Road. Slater was edged out into 2nd and a consistent Nichols in 3rd again. The 3rd climb saw the riders tackle the queens stage of the event, Hagg Hill. A real tester for all the senior riders but this time Savage would, for the first time distance Slater over the summit of the 4 minute climb. Further back, former Magnificent 7 winner Andy Nichols was consistently scoring points which would help him in the overall standings.
Climb 4 was a new one for 2020. Ivy Park presented riders with an average gradient of 13% over 800 meters. Again it was Savage out front but had a fresh challenge from Kirk Vickers. Although Vickers threatened to take the maximum points, he was no real match to the climbing speed of Savage. Slater came in 3rd with Nichols close on his wheel and Joe Clark, Cycling Sheffield rounded off the top 5.

The spectator lined climb of Blake Street welcomed the riders for climb 5. The short climb up Sheffield’s steepest street was an opportunity for the sprinters and possibly an opportunity for Graham Briggs to make his mark. The group came into the climb filling the road from curb to curb. Last years winner on Blake Street, Kieran Smith, Lifting Gear Products / Cycles in Motion launched a great sprint and was too strong for anyone to challenge him. Briggs came in a close second and Nichols was again 3rd. Savage would roll over in 4th place and crucially one place ahead of Slater.
Returning for 2020 was Back Lane. It’s ridiculously steep assent to Holdworth on the outskirts of Sheffield saw Savage again come out on top with Slater again in 2nd just two bike lengths behind on the tight, testing rural climb. Nichols again came in 3rd and 4th place went to Vickers, gaining points over Briggs who had slipped back, rolling over the line in 16th place.
The route to the final climb followed the Tour de France Grand Départ route for a while and then diverted up the final ascent which was the longest climb of the day. The 1.6 kilometre climb of Burnt Hill averaged 9.1% and the riders faced a strong headwind in brightening conditions. Coming into the final 300 meters, the leading riders were surprisingly together and a bunch sprint looked likely. It was Savage who opened up the gallop but Slater finally showed he had the legs over a long climb to overcome the Cycling Sheffield rider. A strong sprinting Briggs bounced back with 3rd with the usual suspects of Nichols and Vickers rounding off the top 5.
Despite his ride on Back Lane, Briggs did enough for 5th place, 4th went to the newcomer Kirk Vickers and the most consistent rider of the day, Nichols claimed 3rd place. Two first places for Slater saw him home in a comfortable 2nd but again for the 3rd year running, King of the Mountains was Kieran Savage bagging £150 in the process.
2019 Women’s champion Hannah Larbalestier, Team Boompods returned the defend her title over the same course as the men. This year she faced some strong opposition from 2019 Monsal Hill Climb winner, Brother UK rider, Rebecca Richardson. Climb 1 saw Richardson stamp her authority early into the first climb by distancing her rivals and keeping in touch with the leading veteran riders. This strong start would see Richardson match the leading vets on nearly every one of the seven climbs. The Brother UK rider went on to show she’s in some very good form by easily winning all but one climb.
The battle behind was very interesting. Defending champion Larbalestier had a fight on her hands for the two remaining podium places. Hannah Bayes, Liv AWOL Spokd beat Larbalestier on climb 1 with local rider Abbie Taylor, Fusion CC Dronfield coming in fourth on the first climb. Taylor went on to finish 2nd on Waller Road and win convincingly on the fifth climb at Blake Street. This was enough to earn her 5th overall. The battle for second, third and fourth was between Larbalestier, Bayes and Saddleworth Clarion rider, Martha Tibbot. After being beaten on the first climb, Larbalestier got the better of Bayes over the next 4 climbs which pushed Bayes back to fourth but it was Tibbot who, with some fine results on Hagg Hill, Ivy Park and Back Lane would finish in the runner up spot behind the very impressive Richardson.
In the vets category double champion James Allen, Sheffrec CC was absent so the door was open for a new victor. Little did we know that Darren Hull, Fusion CC Dronfield would be a one man show over all seven climbs. Hull who was runner up in 2019 cruised to victory on every climb and never looked like being beaten, even on the short blast of Blake Street. Behind Hull, 7 Hills rider Gavin Alcock was impressive with four 2nd place finishes which would be enough to beat Olly Humphries, Haus Racing Team into third and claim second overall.
In the 50+ veterans category, Common Lane Occassionals rider Neil Bentley proved too strong for last years runner up, Killian Lomas, BMBO to win the category. Richard Walker, VTTA rounded off the top 3. Sheffrec CC would like to thank Sheffield City Council for allowing seven road closures for the event, Trek Sheffield for the spot prizes and mechanical backup, Dave Coulson from Cycling Sheffield for driving the lead car, Steve Harrop from Skyhook Coaching for driving the broom wagon, Our Cow Molly for the donation of a spot prize and to the residents of Sheffield for support on all the magnificent climbs. Without their support this event simply wouldn’t happen.
