FORMER Cyclo-Cross World Champion Evie Richards continued her return with an emphatic victory in round 10 of the Shimano Lazer West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League, while Tom Payton won the men’s event.

The Valley, in Evesham, welcomed back the league for the event organised by Royal Leamington Spa CC in conjunction with the Boardman Performance Centre.

The course consisted of a mixture of muddy grassy terrain, a tough climb and a wooded section. Both riders also showed their skills while battling against muddy conditions to win earlier in the month at Malvern and both won in similar fashions on this occasion.

In the men’s race Stourbridge CC rider Payton, who at the Boardman Performance Centre, charged clear of Jonathan Brain (Mid Shropshire Whls) to take his second win of the series. Payton was joined at the head of the race by previous round winner Brain who forced the pace throughout the event.

However, he couldn’t shake Payton who used his speed and skills in the wooded section on the final lap to ride away for victory by 21 seconds. Behind Chris Roberts (Hafren CC) had a lonely ride in third place a minute behind the winner.

“I work for Boardman so it is in our back garden really,” said Payton. “We are on the retail park and the course was on a big piece of land behind it. I had expected not to have time in the morning to pre-ride so I checked out the course on Saturday after work. However, by the time we raced on it the course had cut up and changed so it made for another muddy race.”

“The start was in a straight line and slightly downhill into a sharp right and hairpin which I thought would be a pinch point so I wanted to get a good start. I managed that so I was more relaxed and was in touch with Anthony (Neave) who went hard. He slipped on a wooded section so spent time chasing to get back on.”

“That left me and Jonathan Brain for most of the race and we had a good tussle. He was leading for three quarters of it and I was just trying to keep the gap to 10 or 15 seconds. It was another muddy course so I paced myself and came back towards the end. On the last lap I was with him. Up the long climb he went hard but I stayed with him. In the woods I managed to get through better and had a gap to win.

“I quite enjoy the muddy courses and trying to pace myself as much as possible, although the fitness I have isn’t huge I tried to use it the best I could.”

Vets

Philip Glaze (Fishface Cycles RT) returned to top spot in the veteran’s 40-49 age category for his fourth victory of the series. The early leader in the veteran’s category was Colin Miller (Ride Coventry) who led the opening two laps ahead of previous round winner Nicholas Popham (Rotor Race Team).

However, Miller began to fade on the third lap leading lone leader Popham to fend off the challenge of Glaze. On the final lap Glaze paced his effort perfectly to pass his rival and win by three seconds.

The junior race proved to be another close battle with early leader Josh Field (Halesowen A&CC) holding on to take the win from Ryan Greaves (Lichfield City CC), with Oliver Baker (Wolverhampton Whls) finishing third.

WOMENS

After dominating during her last appearance in the league two weeks earlier Richards was once again in emphatic form. The Trek Factory Racing rider who finished third in the Waterloo round of the World Cup earlier in the season rode away from her rivals to win by over three minutes.

Veteran rider Tracy Moseley (T-MO Racing) chased her Malvern counterpart in second place while Melissa Baker (Team Empella Cyclo-Cross.com) finished third. Fastest junior was once again Isla Mason (Team Empella Cyclo-Cross.com).

After having to settle for second in recent weeks Stephen Knight (Team Jewson MI Racing) once again returned to the top of the podium in the veteran’s over-50 race. Knight pulled out a gap on the opening lap and then consistently increased his margin into a comfortable one.

Behind visiting rider to the league John Elwell (East Bradford CC) came through to take second while Leon Field (CC Giro) finished third. Quickest veteran aged 60+ was Kirby Bennett (Team Jewson MI Racing).

Consistency payed off for Harry Cockroft (Malvern Cycle Sport) as he took his second win of the series in the under-16 boys’ event. Sullivan Berry (Redditch Road & Path CC) led the chase behind in second while Fred Meredith (Hafren CC) finished third. In the under-14 category Spencer Corder again took victory after catching Rotor Race Team team-mate Lewis Tinsley, who had the faster start.

Corder regained the lead on the second lap and extended his margin over Tinsley, while Alex Hart (Mid Shropshire Whls) finished third. Daphne Jones (Mid Shropshire Whls) continued her domination of the youth girls’ category with another dominant display to win by over three-and-a-half minutes.

She was once again chased by leading under-14 rider Hannah Cockroft (Malvern Cycle Sport) while under-16 category rider Abigail Miller (WXC Racing) finished third. Second under-14 girl was Mari Porton (Redditch Road & Path CC) while Zoe Parker (Solihull CC) finished third.
