Q&A: with Cero’s Kieran Frend

Who better to quiz on Cero wheels than former professional with An Post, Kieran Frend at Cycle Division’s shop in Barton under Needham

1. What are the lightest wheelsets that Cero do?
Kieran: The lightest wheelsets we produce are the Cero RC35 rim brake and also the Cero RC38T tubular which is a disc brake wheelset…

2. What would you say is the best all-round wheelsets for racing and training?
Kieran: If we could only ever sell one wheelset, it would be the AR30 (aluminium) – it is perfect for training but also won national level races.

3. Fastest wheelset for crits etc?
Kieran: RC50, definitely the fastest.

4. Which of the wheels are Tubeless ready?
Kieran: As of now (December 21, 2018), other than the one tubular wheelset, every single wheelset is now tubeless compatible.

5. Best wheelset for cyclo-cross
Kieran: RC38 tubular which is what Josie Nelson is winning rounds of the Junior National Trophy on and getting on the podium with the elite women too.

6. What are the biggest changes to the wheels have you seen most since you started working for Cero?
Kieran: Rim profiles and widths – everything is wider which gives that extra support to the tyre so you can at lower pressures. Tubeless is big as well and we tend to see a lot of cyclocross and off road guys running tubeless tyres. We are doing a lot more disc brake wheels now to and we have a better braking surface on our carbon wheels than we ever have done and the wheels come with the market leading brake pads too.

7. Which wheelset would you race on?
Kieran: RC50s… everytime. Love them to bits.

8. Most popular wheelset with customers?
Kieran: AR30 … leads by a long way.

9. Finally, do the wheels take tyres as big as 28mm?
The wheels take 28mm ones comfortably but we have guys who will run 35 or 38s like for cyclocross tubeless. Some of the gravel bikes we see guys running 40c tyres and the rims take it no problem.
