Caleb Ewan wins his second stage  and takes back the leader’s jersey whilst Graham Briggs snatches two jerseys on a good day his British team

Stage one winner Caleb Ewan has claimed his second victory today for ORICA-SCOTT on stage three of the OVO Tour of Britain.

The 23-year-old sprinter showed incredible speed, narrowly edging out Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension-Data) on a lunge to the line, to take the victory and bonus seconds to now move back into the overall race lead.

“Today was a tough day obviously with the weather,“ said Ewan after the rainy conditions. “So it wasn’t as straight forward as we would have hoped and I think it made it a bit harder. We had to sit at the front all day, taking a bit of the wind and then with the hill coming up close to the finish line that made it a bit tricky as well.”

The day’s breakaway survived out front for the majority of the stage, only being caught 10kilometres to go but it was Philippe Gilbert (Quickstep-Floors) who created panic for the sprinter’s teams with a late, strong attack inside the final kilometre.

“After Gilbert went, I was pretty confident in Luka Mezgec, he knows what he is doing so I could just follow him,” Ewan continued. “He had to go pretty much full gas as soon as he started the lead out so that made it harder for me as well.”

“To be honest, I was on his wheel and pretty pinned. As soon as he swung off I just gave it my all and did a big lunge for the line and luckily I just got the win ahead of Eddie.”

Edvald Boasson Hagen: “The team was perfect again today. They led me into the final, all the way up until the last hundred meters. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish it off. However, I will continue to try”.

Alexander Kristoff: “There was some bad weather today with rain at the start. In the final it was slightly uphill in the last 2k’s. I managed to come into an OK position. Mads tried to stay in my wheels in case he could help me in the end, but he lost it just a bit. By the top of the climb when it was time to sprint I didn’t have so much left in my legs but third was still a good result behind Ewan and Edvald and close at the end of the day. Maybe in a few days I will be really up there”

How it happened:

The riders were welcomed to the start of stage three in Normanby Hall Country Park but under typically British weather conditions with grey skies and rain. The day began like previous stages with an active start and a breakaway of five riders (Harry Tanfield, Ian Bibby, Graham Briggs, Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis) and Pete Williams escaping within the opening 10 kilometres of the 177 kilometre stage.

The leaders quickly created a lead of over three minutes with ORICA-SCOTT and the current race leading team, Team Sky, doing the workload to control the distance. With 45kilometres remaining, the breakaway’s advantage quickly dropped to just one-minute 20seconds as the pace lifted in the peloton, with teams keen on having a third bunch sprint.

However, the breakaway continued to fight, with the remaining escapees only being caught with 10kilometres left. In the final kilometre, Gilbert launched a dangerous attack and led into the final 400metres but as the fierce sprint behind opened up he was quickly passed as Ewan and Boasson Hagen fought all the way to the line.

After another photo finish, Ewan was crowned the stage winner and overall leader with five more stages to come.
