Tom Pidcock wins the final stage up the Tumble and the overall for the Junior Tour of Wales with it.
Final: Junior Tour of Wales
With only seconds of a lead going into the final stage, Tom Pidcock had a lot of rider watching to do on the final stage of the Junior Tour of Wales but in the end, it was all under control and he hit his rivals near the top of the Tumble to win with plenty of space to celebrate a great victory.
The stage saw plenty of moves but not by the riders who were a danger to Pidcock. One of the early moves saw Michael Hall, George Wharton and Oliver Robinson open up a gap of 14 secs advantage on the peloton. That group soon grew to seven; Breandan Flanagan, George Wharton, Oliver Robinson, Joe Swinnerton, Harry Yates (Hargroves Cycles/Ridely/Monezuma’s), Sam Walsham, and Benjamin Barlow.
At the first KoM though it was alltogether and the GC contenders fought it out with Ben Healy getting the verdict from Fred Wright, Tom Pidcock and Mark Donovan. Two riders then forged clear, Michael Hall and Benjamin Barlow ahead of two chasers Lewis Winfield & Lewis Hartley.
Out of them though, Benjamin Barlow was the only one to survive and he led the stage for a while, getting the points in the Sprint ahead of Michael Hall, Lewis Hartley and Lewis Winfield. After a regrouping, John Buller & Ronan Tuomey got clear and from them, Ronan Tuomey ploughed on alone.
The move was doomed though as the big battle was set to be fought out on the Tumble and so it was. Here’s the winner Tom Pidcock explaining what happened on the stage.
When asked was he control of the GC today, Tom replied “surprisingly yeah. Yesterday was such a hard day, and I was on my knees but today I was feeling alright. The Backstedt team was driving coming onto the Tumble, so that stopped any attacks that was as big help and then I didn’t have the confidence to go from the bottom, so I followed the moves and then at the top, I thought I’m the strongest here, I’ll go.”… continued after advert
“I had all the numbers on my stem of who to watch so kept my eye on them. Compared to what I expected it was to be, I thought everyone would be hitting me so I was happy with how it went.”
“Coming into the climb, I knew if I hadn’t been chasing all day, I could keep the six seconds so at the end went for the stage.” On there being no wheelie, Tom replied “I noticed there was a cross wind so I didn’t want to embarrass myself and thought a normal celebration would do.”
Tom is now heading for Switzerland next weekend and then the Worlds. Asked if the Worlds is a huge aim, he replied, “I think so. I have had quite a lot of mental pressure this weekend so I want to see what next weekend is like and then stay fresh for the worlds.
Tom is of course, already World Junior Cross champion and this coming season will be his first as a senior (U23). I’ll have two weeks off after the road season, a week off and then I’m off into my races, so not much rest.” Tom added he may well be based near Monaco near Nice.
