Team News: Molly Weaver Joins Drops Cycling

Drops Cycling Team are pleased to announce Molly Weaver as their first signing for the 2018 season. The British rider, hailing from Shropshire and resides in Girona, Spain, moves from Team Sunweb after two and a half seasons with the Dutch-registered team.

After a serious crash in February of this year, which left Molly almost paralysed, it’s fair to say 2017 has been a difficult season for the 23-year-old. That crash left Molly with five broken vertebrae, four ribs, a crushed chest as well as injuries to her back and shoulder. Her recovery to date has shown how motivated and determined a rider she is. She’s already completed races this season and three races at World Tour level after doctors initially expected her to never race again.

Previous to the crash, Molly showed her potential with top performances throughout the season, helping Liv-Plantur to many podiums, along with her own top twenty on GC at The Women’s Tour including a top ten stage result during that race.

Molly commented “I couldn’t be happier to announce that I’ll be joining Drops next year. From the first conversation, we had I could tell that this was going to be the perfect fit. The environment they have built, and the aspirations and continued progression of the team are all things I can’t wait to be a part of.”

She continued “2017 has been a difficult year, but it’s allowed me the time to consider the next steps in my career and look for the opportunity to take on more of a team leader role. Every time Bob and I talk it reinforces to me how our ambitions and principles are aligned.”

Team Director, Bob Varney said “We are all delighted to have signed Molly Weaver to our squad. Molly brings with her a wealth of experience gained at the highest level of our sport, and will provide invaluable help and guidance to the young development riders within our squad.”

He continued “Molly will take on the mantle of Road Captain for 2018 and will be our Leader for selected Spring Classics. In addition to her new leadership responsibilities, Molly will also slip back into her role of Domestique effortlessly when required.”

Molly extended her thanks to Team Sunweb, “I would like to thank Team Sunweb for the past three seasons, and I’m grateful for the experience I’ve gained there. I’m also sad to be leaving my teammates who could not have been more supportive this year.”

Molly will join her new teammates in December for the team’s first training camp whilst her new contract begins from January 1st, 2018.
