Result: Tour of the Reservoir – Stage 2 (Women)

Stage 2 of the Women’s Tour of Reservoir was won by Laura Massey who held off the overall winner and stage 1 winner Melissa Lowther in the dash for the line.

After a very active opening lap of the Reservoir, Rebecca Johnson escaped on the Queen of the Mountains climb whilst behind, the peloton was soon in tatters as a group formed at the front of the race with the pink jersey Lowther and her closest rivals.

This group with the strongest riders in the race, reeled in Johnson on the big loop over Horseshoe hill, a five mile climb from Blanchland through the moorlands ravaged by cross winds and littered with roaming sheep which saw the odd message on race radio of ‘sheep in the road’ from time to time.

Riders in the leading group included the pink jersey Lowther, Hayley Simmonds and Massey, who were second and third respectively on day one, as well as Natalie Grinczer who was fifth. A rider more noted for her cyclo-cross endeavours but having a great road season, Hannah Payton, who finished sixth on Saturday, also found herself in the mix. The group also included series leader Chanel Mason.

Whilst the final lap on the circuit of the Reservoir was active again, the stage was decided in a sprint to the line and with Lowther having an 11 second lead over Simmonds and a much bigger one over the rest of her rivals, she did enough to clinch the overall jersey whilst Massey managed to sprint clear of everyone to win the stage on the tough finish at the Reservoir wall.

First time up the climb at the picnic grounds, and there was attacking at the front of the peloton.

And there wasn’t much left of the peloton

In the sprint for the line, Laura Massey wins that battle whilst Melissa Lowther isn’t far behind in the pink jersey
