Women’s Tour: Final Stage
(By Gordon Wiseman)

Having opened a 1m 42s lead by winning the opening stage of this year’s OVO Energy Women’s Tour – now arguably the premier event in the women’s WorldTour – Kasia Niewiadoma (WM3 Pro Cycling) rode beyond her 22 years to take the overall win as the race came to a dramatic finish around ten laps of a crowded 6.2km circuit in the heart of London this afternoon.

But with the 2017 edition of the SweetSpot organised race including some of the longest successive stages in the women’s calendar and with the amount of climbing – around 2400m in Saturday’s Chesterfield based stage, reckoned to be more climbing metres than in any singe stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile – it was never the case that Kasia had the race win sown up from that brilliant start.

Determined to show to all that her leader’s green jersey was going to stay firmly on her back, from the opening lap of the London stage the Polish National Champion made her intentions clear by showing her face in the front group that broke away in the first lap.

And with that group including Hannah Barnes (Canyon SRAM Racing) – seeking GC bonus seconds – and a quintet of Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team riders determined to ensure Christine Majerus was in pole position to pick up as many Eisberg Sprints Jersey points as possible, the chasing peloton had their work cut out to pull back their up to 30 second deficit.

But, after taking Kasia out of the equation, there were around 10 riders covered by just 30 seconds on GC and so they weren’t going to let the front group build up much more of a lead. Because that, the field re-grouped after the first Sprint of the afternoon, Barnes grabbing 3 precious GC seconds, Majerus adding equally important Eisberg points to her total.

Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Cervélo-Bigla Pro Cycling) was particularly active in forcing the pace at the front of the race, herself chasing an improved GC position.

In the second Sprint Hannah Barnes and Majerus repeated their 1-2 from the first sprint and this was enough for the Luxemburg rider to win the Sprints completion and for Barnes to move up to equal 3rd on GC – with Team Sunweb’s Leah Kirchmann – with only the final sprint and possible further bonus seconds to come.

Boels-Dolmans were showing their colours to the fore in the closing laps but as the riders turned onto the finishing straight and the leg-grabbing final drag to the line to come, it was Jollen D’Hoore (Wiggle High5) who sprinted to the win from Barnes and Majerus.

D’Hoore’s win meant all five stages were won by different teams, Majerus made it a double trip to the winner’s podium to collect the Sprints and Points jerseys whilst Barnes moved into third place overall on GC and collected the final Best British Rider’s jersey – ahead of her younger sister Alice (Drops) who’d had the honour of wearing the jersey on two earlier days of the race.

For Kasia it was her first ever overall WorldTour stage win, adding to her already bulging selection of Young Rider jerseys in previous years and so only emphasising what a developing talent she is on the women’s racing scene.

“I’m super happy. That’s the only word that can describe my feelings’ Kasia explained after the race. ‘It wasn’t up to me to do anything in the leading group, I had my green jersey so I just had to ride. I knew I had to stay at the front all the time as at the back and in the middle it was super hectic. I’ve been waiting for a WorldTour victory for a long time, I was all the time second, third, second third so I’m super delighted when I could grab it.

“I’m super glad and super thankful for all the people who are around me and help me develop and every year make that next step ahead. For sure, without them I wouldn’t be here because they’ve put a lot of effort in to help me in my development. And so I’m super pleased that finally I can give them something back and say Thank You so much for letting me grow now that the results are coming.

Hannah Barnes: At the end of a week long battle with her younger sister Alice, and coming 18-months on from a prolonged injury lay-off with a broken leg, Hannah Barnes was best British rider and 3rd overall. “It’s been a really hard week. Unfortunately we lost Ale [Alena Amialiusik] to a really bad crash on Stage Three so we only had five riders and yesterday’s stage was really hard, but it came back together, which helped us. I knew I pretty much had to win both intermediate sprints and place well in the sprint to finish on the podium today and I managed to do that.

“I’ve been working really hard and this was one of the big targets of the year for me. I’m pleased I came into it strongly. The first day I didn’t feel great, it felt like it was going to be a really bad five days. But it helps that I can ride into a stage race and I think my training going into the race has paid off.”
