Junior Harrison Wood (Mid Devon CC) was the overall winner of the Tour of Milbury’s race on Saturday – Graham Robins reports
Report: Tour of the Milburys
From Graham Robins | Saturday 20th May 2017
Junior Harrison Wood (Mid Devon CC) was the overall winner of the Tour of Milbury’s race after a 6th place in the morning TT and then winning the road race sprinting clear of a large group and then collecting a 30seconds bonus.
The two stage race consisted of a 4 mile time trial followed a couple of hours later by an eight lap 69mile road race on the demanding Owslebury course about five miles from the mornings HQ.
The morning started warm and sunny with a slight wind all around the prologue course as the 80 riders climbed for the most up to the top of Old Winchester Hill. Nic McKibbin was the quickest over the test clocking a time of 9mins 44secs with Michael Ford (VC St Raphael0 18secs adrift and Paul Elcock (GS Henley) in third.
A longer than anticipated neutralised section took the riders onto the course on the first of the eight laps. Heavy overnight rain had caused a partial flood on the course which was giving concerns to the race officials. I decision was made to ‘show’ the riders the course and they were told they would be asked to ride through the section in single file on each lap. A sudden downpour between lap two and three managed to wash away the mud deposited overnight making racing safer for the riders.
As the race completed most of the first lap racing got underway in earnest as a break of four riders tried to pull clear. With riders pushing the speed along it wasn’t to longer before one solo rider tried his luck and this was Thomas Grigson (Radeon-Bike Science). Thomas managed to pull a gap as the race turned the Owslebury cross road junction but by the top of the climb he was already being pulled back.
One whole lap later it was Dextor Hurlock (Kibosh) was making a move as the rain had now stopped and his lead was climbing to 25secs. James Peckham (Sotonia CC) was second on the road with the peloton a further ten seconds back. At the mid race distance Andrew Critchlow (Wyndy Milla) was leading with a gap back to the bunch of 38secs, and this seemed to be the catalyst for the bunch to wake up and suddenly there were small groups of riders jumping off front of the bunch.
… continued after advert
With a little over two laps to go Critchlow was joined by six riders and this group seemed to have the legs to stay away from the remainder of the bunch. The strong group included George Clark (Catford CC), Alexander Cross (Team Vision), Jack Hardwicke (Strada Sport), Ben Davis (Bristol RC), Neil Phillips ((Kibosh) and Matthew Downie (Primera Team-Jobs).
Critchlow took final bonus at the bell but was soon joined by the six chasers. Whilst it look like the winner would possibly come from this group of seven the remainder of the bunch began to split apart and with a couple of miles to go the seven riders swelled to fifteen. As the group came into view of the finish line it was difficult to tell who was going to take the win until a few meters from the line when Harrison Wood popped up with his arms aloft.
Once back at the HQ and all the results with the bonus seconds calculated Harrison Wood was announced as winner and he collected his winners yellow jersey.
