News: Spanish Sprinter Sanz Joins Raleigh GAC

Sanz, with podiums in races such as Castilla y Leon, Circuito de Getxo, Tour Limousin, Bayern-Rundfart and Tour Poitou-Charentes as well as fourth behind Kittel and Cavendish in Liverpool during the Tour of Britain, is fast and very motivated to be racing in Britain.

Team owner Cherie Pridham explained “Enrique will certainly strengthen the squad we already have, and we are excited to see him in action in the UK. He has already raced with the team’s Spanish riders this year, Seb Mora and Adria Moreno. We have been speaking for a while now, and one thing became clear very quickly and that is Enrique is very motivated and has a big desire to get back to winning bike races.”

“Having ridden at WorldTour level with Movistar for five years, Sanz will bring a lot of experience to the team having ridden for GC stars like Quintana and Rui Costa. He will face new challenges here in the UK, but he is no stranger to our roads, having raced the Tour of Britain with top tens on the sprint stages. He also knows the weather can be pretty special too!”

With over 50 top ten places in pro races, Sanz is a rider who is capable of helping the team continue its success as well as enhance its palmeres from past years. Enrique Sanz started racing at 16 and as a junior, had fourteen victories including the Spanish Championship, and then followed that up with nine wins as an under 23.

From Pamplona in Spain, Enrique Sanz, as well as riding the track, has also learned a lot riding for a team such as Movistar from being a domestique to leading the team across the line as a sprinter. After an illness plagued 2016, Enrique says he’s very motivated for 2017 and looking forward to getting stuck in to the racing and celebrating winning races again.

In a recent interview, it is perhaps quite telling when he talked about his experience in the country’s national Tour. “In the Tour of Britain, on the second or third stage, I was with fever and it rained a lot, it was a 220 km stage with constant ups and downs … I had a terrible time. But days later, I recovered and on the last stage I was 4th, disputing the sprint with Kittel and Cavendish. If I had not suffered and dug in that day, I would not have been able to fight for that sprint”.

In 2017, Sanz has already had top 10s in the pro races including 5th on stage 3 of the Tour of Valenciana and it’s no surprise that Team owner Cherie Pridham is delighted to have had the opportunity to bring Enrique to Britain and join the team which has other fast riders such as Sebastian Mora and Yoeri Havik.

In other rider news, Richard Hepworth has decided to leave the team to concentrate on family life with his fiance Claire. The team have wished Richard and Claire a really great 2017!
