The Northumberland & Durham Cycling Association awards night was held at The Town Wall in Newcastle on Sunday 29th January. There was a good turnout, with all the members having the opportunity to reminisce about last season and look forward to the start of the 2017 campaign in 2 months’ time.

GS Metro BAR team champions

The 2016 season saw more people competing than ever before, with an average field of over 60 riders at each event. All the categories were hotly contested, with some close results.

Carl Donaldson had an outstanding season, winning in four overall categories – 10, 25, 50 and 100 mile time trials. Danny Grieves picked up the N&DCA Individual Championship Trophy for being the top finisher in the Best All Rounder league, adding to his success at National level.

Amongst the women, Fiona Burnie of Bishop Auckland CC had a strong season, picking up the Hill Climb League and Best All Rounder titles. Charlotte Cooper of GS Metro won both the 25 mile and 50 mile championships, while Teri Wishart (also GS Metro) picked up the 10 mile title.

In the Veterans, Colin Atkinson won the Hill Climb League and the BAR in the Road Bike category and the Juniors once again had a very strong season, with Zeb Kyffin (Gosforth RC) winning the 10 mile title; Craig Gow (Tyneside Vagabonds) winning in the 100 mile category and Daniel Dixon (Gosforth RC) winning the Best All Rounder title.

Team prizes were awarded to Muckle CC in the Hill Climb League; to Houghton CC in the Vets BAR; and GS Metro in the overall BAR. Allen Armstrong, President of N&DCA, presented the trophies.
