News: Archer Spring Criterium

The 61st Archer Spring Criterium at Hillingdon on 8 April is thought to be an unique in that it is for 1/2 category riders, but no elites, while ambitious 3rd cats are welcome to take on the challenge. Otherwise the latter can join 4th cats in the support races

The prize list of well over £1,500 is appropriate for its 61 years. It is the oldest, other than the Lincoln GP, in the country. Its roll of honour includes Bradley Wiggins, Roger Hammond, Matt Stephens, Steve Heffernan and Graham Webb among many other subsequent champions on their way to stardom.

Advance entry is essential as there were full fields for both races in 2016. For 3rd and 4th cat. riders there will be two concurrent support races of 60 and 40 respectively, with entries split on a first come basis.

Despite its long-levity, there is the danger that this will be the last promotion. 84 year old Stuart Benstead, an organiser of all of them, albeit with support on occasion from other clubs, is reluctantly having to consider the necessity of stepping down with no obvious successor, despite funds being secure.
