Q & A: Adeline Moreau (The 5th Floor)

1. How did you get into cycle racing?
Adeline: I stuck knobblies and a free wheel on my fixed gear free style bike and took all the tequila short cuts at the last Rapha Supercross in Ally Pally. The following season (2015-16) I lined up for the London League. Disappointing to find out boozy-boosts were the exception and not the rule in bike racing!

2. What’s your favourite discipline in cycling?
Adeline: CYCLOCROSS

3. What is the best thing about bike racing?
Adeline: It teaches you a lot about how far out of your comfort zone you can go. And that learning applies to daily life too.

4. What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Adeline: It’s been a pretty packed and super-positive year. If I really have to narrow it to one thing, it would be Joining the team. I think we give each other so much enthusiasm that it’s the source of the vast majority of this year’s many highlights.

5. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Adeline: 3 Peaks CX – It was a long time coming and the combination of efforts on many different fronts. But as I raced it, everything felt right. Gear, fitness, mental strength. I cherish moments where – despite all the anxiety in the time running up to the event – everything falls into place and you just feel like you’ve got this.

6. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Adeline: Tour of Kärnten – That was the exact opposite. After a bad first stage, nothing felt right anymore. All I was left with was self doubt. But the success of Aoife, Petra and Soph kept me going, and they helped me see the end of the 6 days of racing.

7. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Adeline: Mind games and nutrition.

8. What is the best piece of equipment (clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Adeline: My own Mercredi CX – first bike I made which makes me dead happy whenever I jump on it.

9. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Adeline: More often than I’d like, it’s just a sprint from the train station.

10. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Adeline: Mix of miles and efforts, with added skills and drills.

11. How do you manage your sport and working?
Adeline: Early mornings and lots of snacks.

12. Finally, what are the goals for 2017 and when will you start racing?
Adeline: First things first, we’ll finish the cross season strong. Then some long adventures races like the Dirty Reiver – before building up fitness for short and sharp crit races like the Tour Series and the Nocturnes. That’ll be the end of my road season, and I’ll focus on cross with 3 peaks first, some local leagues and hopefully some races back in Belgium too. If 2017 is anywhere near as good as 2016, it sure will be a great year.
