Herne Hill Velodrome, South London – Crowdfunding Campaign ends 24 th Dec

At Herne Hill Velodrome (SE London), a new Pavilion is nearing completion. It symbolises the affirmation of this iconic cycling venue’s future, after coming close to permanent closure in 2010.

Beautifully designed (by the same architect as the 2012 Olympic Velodrome) and funded by the Marathon Trust, Sport England, the Mayor’s Fund and Southwark Council, it is due to open in March 2017. Official charity, The Herne Hill Velodrome Trust negotiated a 99 year lease for the building, which is great news given that leasehold difficulties were the original threat to this much loved cycling facility.

But funding is still required to fit out the building with amenities and appliances and specialist sports equipment. The Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome (The fundraising arm of the Trust) got their heads together, made a video and launched a Crowdfunding campaign (www.crowdfunder.co.uk/thebigfinish ) called ‘The Big Finish’ (as it marks the end of the famous Save the Velodrome Campaign).

Officially launched on the 9th December 2016, the original target of £75,000 was reached in under a week and the campaign has been ‘stretched’ to a target of £100,000 with additional funding to be used to upgrade cycling facilities around the site. For donations of £10 or more, backers can claim a reward, from caps & t-shirts to limited edition kit, track bikes and cycling masterclasses.

Steeped in cycling history, Herne Hill remains the only 1948 Olympics venue still in use and has provided a vital training and racing resource to cyclists and cycling fans for over 125 years. Generations of champions have raced, developed and trained on the 450m oval, including recent cycling alumni; Bradley Wiggins, Laura Kenny (Trott) and Joanna Rowsell Shand.
