As expected, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and Hannah Payton were the big winners at the final round of the National Trophy in Shrewsbury, organised by Dave Mellor and his team from the Mid Shropshire Wheelers

In the Men’s race, the expected battle between Field and Liam Killeen who denied Field the British title at the same venue in January did not materialise as the Hargroves Cycles-Ridley rider dominated the race to win his third round of the Series and his third series overall.

Afterwards, Field told Andy Whitehouse “It’s a bit of a shame Yorben isn’t here. I don’t know how it would’ve gone, but I like to think I would’ve had the upper hand on him. I’m happy with three series wins in a row but I’d like to make it four next year! “

““The course was slightly different to last year with a bit of the course being more in the woods. It was muddy enough to make it hard going but not like the Nationals where it was a bit ridiculous! I was changing bikes every single lap and that felt just about right that, I don’t think I needed half lap changes. I didn’t ever feel the mech pulling”.

In the Women’s race, Hannah Payton (above) won that race in fine style, attacking early on the opening lap and continuing on alone to win solo. In a thrilling final lap, Junior Emily Wadsworth attacked her group, dropping rival Sophie Thackray and going on to chase down Diane Lee and Annie Simpson. Wadsworth finished the race second, her best finish of the series while Simpson held on to third and Lee was fourth.

Afterwards, Payton spoke to Andy Whitehouse – “It’s really nice to win the Series and be up there every round and consistent,” said Payton. “These kind of courses are really about power, keeping upright and keeping safe, so once I had a bit of a lead on the first lap I opened up to about 10-15 seconds pretty quickly.

In the other races, Nick Craig won his fourth round of the series to secure the Veteran 40-49 National Trophy Series. On a course that suited him, ie muddy, Craig solo’d to victory whilst behind Rob Jebb, the expected challenger on such a course, had two punctures which dented his challenge. Dave Collins got the better of new world champion Ian Taylor in the closing laps and completed the podium.

“I’ve never won a Series, so this is a first!” said Craig. “It’s genuine hard racing today – Rob had two punctures today so realistically he should’ve been with me at the end of the race. What a great atmosphere and what great competitive fun. It’s a great sport to be involved in.”

“The organisers (Dave Mellor and Mid Shropshire Wheelers) have done a brilliant job with the course here. With off-camber banking like this, it is bike racing at its best. There’s no hill here but you don’t need it. It’s brilliant racing at a great venue and long may it carry on.”

The over 50s Veteran race was won by Pete Middleton who also won the series overall. He finished ahead of legend Chris Young whilst Steve Davies (Hargroves Cycles- Ridley) completed the podium. In the Vet Women’s race, Bolsover and District’s Maddi Smith took her third win of the Series but it was Isla Rowntree (Islabikes) who took the Series victory.

The Junior Mens race was won by Thomas Mein (Derwentside CC) who held off a chasing Harry Yates (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) to take his first win of the Series. Sam Moses however won the series overall.

The Under 16 Boys race was won by Charlie Craig clinching his first Series title in the process. Lewis Askey, winner at Ipswich, gave Charlie a good run for the win but ended up second with Oliver Draffan third. In the Under 16 Girls, Harriet Harnden made it a clean sweep of five round wins and the overall series title.

In the Under 14 category, Welwyn’s Joe Kiely won his second race of the series but Finlay Pickering (Hull Thursday RC) won the series. In the girls, Anna Wadsworth won her first round of the series but Millie Couzens kept her white jersey and won the overall.
