A last gasp attack from Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish sees them win the Gent 6 Day with just a handful of laps left in the race
Gent 6 Day – Cav and Wiggo Win
When it comes to a last hurrah it doesn’t come any better for Bradley Wiggins than to do it where he spent the early days of his life – at the Gent Six Day. And on Sunday, Bradley Wiggin and Mark Cavendish won the popular 6 Day race with a lap take that took them clear of their two closest rivals.

Prior to that lap take, the British pairing had looked destined to finish third on points but launched a late attack in the final Madison race when they went on to lap the field with just five laps remaining and saw them with the winners bouquets. Second were Kenny De Ketele and Moreno De Pauw and third Elia Viviani and Iljo Keisse.
Afterwards, ‘Wiggo’, not for the first time during the week, hinted the event may not be his last hurrah after all. “I’m not sure yet. I just want to enjoy this moment. I have still got really good legs, so I don’t just want to say, ‘Yeah, that’s 100 per cent it’ and then make an announcement next week. I just want to enjoy today.”
It’s been a long time between drinks for Bradley at Gent who last won the race in 2003 before pursuing a road career. “It’s been nine years since I was last here, 13 years since I won with Matthew Gilmore and 18 since I first came here (to race) as a 19-year-old boy. I was sat in this cabin down here with my father in 1981 and I feel like, I was born here and this has always been a second home to me”.
As for Wiggins and Cavendish, Sir Bradley explained “This will be the last time we race together, for sure. Maybe not my last individually, but as a pairing, given what we have achieved together, it’s incredible.”
