Hannah Payton and Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) winners on what many said was a cracking course in the North East at round 3 of the National Trophy
National Trophy Round 3 (Overall points tables are here)

Round 3 at Hetton Lyons saw Tom Pidcock very proud of his European Champion’s kit and he backed that up with one of the rides of the day to solo to victory in the Juniors.
Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and Hannah Payton were just two of the winners at round 3 of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross at Hetton Lyons Country Park (nr Sunderland) in the North East
On a course that was roundly praised by the riders for being ‘old school’, the National trophy went back to a venue it had been on many years ago, so far back, Ian Field was a youth rider the last time he’d visited the park for a Trophy race.
With Rob Jebb in the background, Nick Craig raises an arm in celebration of the win
Rememberance Sunday began a little earlier than normal to ensure the racing was finished in time for 11am when the venue fell silent to remember those who had given their lives for their country. In that race before that two minutes of silence, normal service was resumed with wins for Nick Craig (40s) and Pete Middleton (50s) but of the two, Craig’s win was never assured.
After Ian Taylor had led for most of the race, first Rob Jebb and then Nick Craig got on terms at the front on a physically tough and technical challenging wearing down course. Then Jebb and Craig were swapping the lead but Craig’s experience as he explains in the video below, triumphed and the yellow jersey crossed the line first ahead of Jebb with Taylor third.

Youth
The two sets of Youth races were then held starting with the Girls where Harriet Harnden (u16) and Millie Couzens (U14) were both very impressive solo winners. In the Under 16’s, Maddie Wadsworth was second whilst a delighted Amy Perryman of Solent Pirates was third and smiling widely as she crossed the line.
Of the two winners though, the younger of them, Millie Couzens, not only won her race but had ridden her way into the top 10 of the riders across the line despite giving the older girls group a head start! Millie finished her race, 1.22 ahead of second placed Anna Wadsworth while third was Charlotte-Louise McGreevy.

Millie Couzens
The Youth boys race saw wins for Charlie Craig, like his dad Nick, racing in yellow, and the green jersey (u14) of Finlay Pickering. Like his dad Nick, Charlie also had some tough competition in the form of local Oli Draffan of Derwentside CC and those two had a great battle before Charlie Craig drew away at the end to win alone.
Charlie Craig
In the Under 14’s Finlay Pickering was kept honest by Joe Kiely (Welwyn Wheelers) who was never far away but the Green jersey stayed upright and came up the finish straight banging his chest in celebration of a win that obviously meant a lot for the Hull Thursday RC rider.
Women & Junior Men
After a break, the racing returned to the course that had a little of everything with the Junior Men and Women’s race.
First to be set off were the Juniors and whilst the European champion Tom Pidcock, proudly wearing the champion’s colours, didn’t get the fastest start, when he did get to the front, the race was his for the taking and by the end, he’d solo’d around the course to put over a minute into a rider who himself had dominated the Youth categories, Dan Tullet. Thomas Mein of Derwentside CC, who had started his cycling career at the venue and was a winner in Belgium recently, was a popular third.
L-R:Â Emily Wadsworth (first junior), Beth Crumpton (2nd), Hannah Payton (1st) and Ffion James (3rd)
In the Women’s racing, it was closer, much much closer! In fact it took a sprint finish down the short straight to settle who was going to stand in the top spot and it was Hannah Payton who got the better of close rival Beth Crumpton, a brand ambassador for VeloUK supporter Estrella Bikes.
There was no World Champion Evie Richard’s on the start, the rider Payton had beaten in the West Midlands league the week before and so it was Crumpton who led from the start but as she admits in an interview, she had to back off as the pace was a bit hot and that allowed Payton to come back and from there on, there was nothing between them. Ffion James (Abergavenny RC) was third and Annie Simpson fourth.
Hannah Payton talking about her race
In the Vets Women’s, National vets champion Maddi Smith of Bolsover & District CC solo’d to the win from the ever old school Isla Rowntree on a single speed bike of her own brand who explained at the start how she’d travelled up by train and then spent the night before going for a ride around the park on the cycle track. She looked very pleased with how it had all gone as well travelling in a style from the old days.
How being on single speed effected her ride we’re unsure but the legend in cyclo-cross battled on ahead of Helen Pattinson (Solent Pirates) and Rowntree’s second place meant she kept her green jersey whilst the podium pic of them all shows how much they are enjoying their cross!
Men’s
In the Men’s event, the expected battle between series leader Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and his Belgium rival Yorben Van certainly dominated the second half of the race whilst in the first half, there was a ringer in the leading group with Under 23 Billy Harding not afraid to put his wheel in front and take the race to them.
It was a mad rush at the start to get to the bottom of the run upÂ
Behind them, the large chase group that formed on the first lap with the usual stars of the Trophy racing, soon exploded and from that, Paul Oldham began his solo chase of the leaders, never far away and holding the gap. As the race went on, Harding started to feel the race in his legs and dropped back from the leaders, first caught and passed by Oldham and then by David Fletcher of the Sherwood Pines club.
But the battle between the two leaders was getting the spectators there vocal and Ian Field over the closing laps, put a dig in and opened up a gap on Van Tichelt who had won the first round and was second in the next round at Abergavenny.
This race was going to settle who had the right to wear yellow (they were equal on points before the race) and that was Ian Field’s who explained in his interview how the last time he’d raced at Hetton park a certain Ian Stannard was in the race way back in the youth categories.
Field won by a massive 48 seconds over Van Tichelt with Oldham a delighted third and his wife saying as we’d spoke during the race, the ‘old’ Paul was back! This being reference to him coming back from an injury and now easing his way into the season following his Three Peaks victory.
And as darkness fell during the podium celebration, the riders were certainly pleased with the course and whilst the number of competitors at round 3 in the Trophy was below that of other rounds, the quality was still there and the course was equal to that.
He may have more competition this year but Ian Field of Hargroves Cycles Ridley is still getting those arms in the air!
