The Cyclone Festival of Cycling Returns to the North East in June 2017 with the UCI Beaumont Trophy (men) and Curlew Cup (Women)

The eleventh edition of the Cyclone Festival of Cycling will take place on 16-18 June 2017. The event is one of the UK’s largest cycling festivals, attracting over three thousand participants and tens of thousands of spectators every year.

The Cyclone is also one of the North-East’s most eagerly anticipated sporting weekends, mixing participation rides for all levels of cyclist and elite racing that attracts many spectators.

Curlew Cup race
WHAT: One of the leading women’s bike races in the UK and part of the Women’s National Road Race Series
WHO: Elite women road cyclists, including national and international stars of the sport
WHERE: Starts in the village of Stamfordham and makes its way through stunning but challenging Northumberland terrain.
WHEN: Sunday June 18, 2017 – morning

Beaumont Trophy race
WHAT: One of a handful of international men’s one day road races in the UK. A stunning road race of over 100 miles, including several ascents of the famous Ryals climb.
WHO: Over 100 elite riders in teams from across the UK and Europe, including many stars of the sport. Recent editions have featured world and Olympic champions.
WHERE: Starts in the village Stamfordham and makes its way through stunning but challenging Northumberland terrain.
WHEN: Sunday June 18, 2017 – afternoon.

Public Rides
The 2017 edition includes routes along the river, through the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, as well as taking in a huge swathe of the Northumberland National Park’s most beautiful countryside to the North and West of the city. With rides for families, leisure cyclists, adventurous riders new to the sport, expert club and “sportive” riders and elite men and women racers, the Cyclone embraces the full cycling spectrum.

Tyne 6 Bridges rides
WHAT: Gentle 10.5 and 15.5 mile traffic free rides along the banks of the Tyne
WHO: Families, accompanied children of all ages, leisure cyclists
WHERE: Newcastle centre
WHEN: Friday 16 June, early evening
Numbers: c.350 riders

Cyclone Challenge rides
WHAT: 34, 64, 90 and 106 mile challenge rides through the Northumbrian countryside to the North and West of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Features regular, locally-manned feed stations, with home-made refreshments in many of the villages. Mobile mechanical backup also available.
WHO: From relative newcomers through to experience club cyclists and “sportive” participants.
WHERE: All rides start from Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park rugby ground, Newcastle.
WHEN: Saturday 17 June 8am onwards
Numbers: c.2500 riders
