News: Tom Pidcock wins Euros

Tom Pidcock showed that the form he showed in the national trophy at round 1 and all last season, is getting better with a solo win in the Junior Men’s European Cyclo-Cross Championship. The Otley rider won his race in Pont Chateau, France, with a 14 second advantage over his nearest rival.

Pidcock, one of the fastest road sprinters, took the lead on the third lap of the eight-lap race and continued to power away from his rivals. There was another British rider in the top 10 as Ben Turner was 7th. Of the other British riders, Thomas Mein was 25th, Toby Barnes 28th and Harry Yates 37th.

In an interview on http://www.be-celt.com he says “I found myself in the lead very early but paced myself”. Asked how he sees his future in ‘cross, Tom replies “I dont really know but one day, I will have to make a choice.” Tom then added the big goal is the World Championships, some rounds of the World Cup and then the British championship in his home county of Yorkshire.”

In the Women’s Elite Championship, both Helen Wyman and Nikki Brammeier were involved in a crash on the opening lap that forced both British riders out of the race. In a message the following morning, Helen Wyman’s husband Stefan tweeted “Helen released from hospital. Many injuries to heal, will take time!”

The day before, the Under 23 women had their championship where Amira Mellor was 20th, Ffion James 21st and Elspeth Grace 24th.
