A stage and the overall for Tim Wilcock of GS Metro in the Allen Valley Velo two stage Hill Climb. Fiona Burnie won the women’s top prize.

Results: Allen Valley Velo Hill Climbs

The 2 stage hill climb was held in the gloriously sunny West Allen Valley, Northumberland (North Pennines) and organised by Allen Valley Velo. It also featured as part of the N&DCA Hill Climb BAR. Entries came in from across the NE and Cumbria.

Stage 1 was a long 4 mile slog towards the Cumbrian border, with a steady uphill gradient nearing 4%. This saw many riders opting for clip on TT bars, with some even opting for a full TT bike setup. Stage 2 was a shorter climb of 1.1 miles with an average gradient of 6.9%, rising very steeply out of the valley, the climb immediately sees gradients of up to 24% before a gentler slog to the finish line.

Avoiding going too far into the red on this climb is essential, with riders attempting to keep a controlled pace from the off – Not easy with a very large and noisy crowd from the organising club cheering riders on.

Stage 1 saw ‘on form’ Tim Wilcox of GS Metro setting a blistering new course record of 12min:25:30 to take the stage win. Stage 2 saw Niall Patterson of Velo Club Cumbria take the stage win in a time of 4min:44:09, edging out Tim Wilcox by just 3 seconds. Fiona Burnie of Bishop Auckland CC won both stages in the Ladies comp, in the process setting a new course record of 14min:38 on stage 1, whilst also taking the overall combined prize.

Tim Wilcox took the combined prize, edging out Junior Zeb Kyffin of Gosforth Road Club by just 16 seconds. The provisional results issued mean that both Tim Wilcox and Fiona Burnie have the N&DCA HC BAR sewn for 2016, despite their being another three stages yet to be completed.
