Summer finally returned to the NSC last Tuesday night for round 17 of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth league. In contrast to the previous two rain-affected rounds the 212 competitors who took part enjoyed perfect racing conditions.

Jack Monaghan continued his winning ways in the novices class, powering away from the field to notch up his sixth successive win. Jasper Whalley got the better of Daniel Coates and Lucas Wootton in the scrap for second, with Austin Baglow leading top girl Safiya Laagayed and Jacob Dawkins over the line for fifth. Harry Tummon held off Charley Skillen, James Cope and Jackson Roberts in the tussle for eighth, while Harvey Wagstaffe overtook Daisy Teare on the finishing straight to snatch 12th. Newcomer Deacon Marchment was an impressive 15th.

In the born 2011 & later category Bobby Kerruish ousted Bobby Kewley to bag maximum points for the first time in the series. Leading girl Abigail Cowell overcame a strong challenge from Jay Jay Plowman to claim the final place on the podium and Joshua Moffitt won the nine-strong chasing bunch sprint for fifth. Eva Pavlova, Charlie Dormer, Toby Costain, Tara Nelson and Poppy Clayton completed the top ten.

Brad Le Geyt escaped from a leading group of four riders to seize the top spot in the born 2010 age group. Conor Madsen-Mygdal ousted Stanley Kinnish and Kylan Murphy for second, with Harrison Skillan pipping Lula Kinnish for fifth. Daniel Minay headed Hugh Osborn home for seventh and Archie Mulholland kept Noah Hughes at bay to grab ninth. Alfie Kinrade won the bunch charge for 11th.

The in-form Tom Pickavance outgunned breakaway partners Zach Jones and Cameron Hounsell to complete a hat-trick of victories in the born 2009 event. Zach Jones edged out Cameron Hounsell for the runners-up spot and Abi Clayton rode clear of Matthew Hooper and Henry Dormer to secure fourth. Charlie Clarkson took the group sprint for seventh ahead of Joseph Dawkins, Florrie Thomas and Harry Jones.

Six riders rode clear at the start of the born 2008 race and stayed together to the finish where Alec Sorby got the verdict in the surge for the chequered flag. Freddie Griffin and T.J.Teare were second and third closely followed by Fearne Bregazzi, Charlie Williams and Joel Long. Chasers Edward Field, Ryan Nelson and Ella Darnill filled seventh to ninth places, with Leon Murphy spearheading Tiana Kelly and Lewis Quirk home to round off the top ten leader board.

Cian Howard came from behind to beat fellow frontrunners Orry Lund, Rio Kelly, Charlie Scarffe and Florence Griffin in the final push for the line at the end of born 2007 class. Jordan Carter, who lost contact with the leaders on the last lap, trailed in for sixth and James Kinrade stayed clear of Jess Pickavance for seventh. Matthew Harrison was a safe ninth and Thomas Monaghan prevailed in the bunch sprint for tenth.

In the born 2006 class Ivan Sorby went from gun and soloed to his fourth success of the season. Nicola Quaye gave chase but was unable to bridge the gap and had to settle for a solid second place ahead of the fast finishing Samuel Devereau. Sophie Smith outran Nathan Kinrade for fourth and Rebecca Cooil maintained sixth in front of Lucy Field and Aaron Rielly.

Kirk Michael’s Dylan Sewell made his intentions clear from the start of the born 2005 & earlier grouping, attacking on the opening lap and time trialling to victory. James Devereau led the gallop for second with Tyler Annis just behind in third place. Mairi Harrison was the first girl in seventh position.

Keeping the pace high, a quartet of riders gradually pulled away from the field in the under-8 and under-10 racing bikes. Drystan Sewell led the way for three of the four laps, but at the finish it was Owen Collins who came through to take the honours, from Ivan Sorby, Cian Howard and Sewell. Charlie Scarffe clipped off the front of the chasing pack to secure fifth, leaving Alec Sorby and T.J.Teare in his wheel tracks to contest sixth and seventh. Orry Lund was eighth and Sophie Smith beat Nicola Quaye to the girls’ prize in ninth spot.

Tyler Annis showed a great turn of speed to win the six-strong sprint at the finish of the U-12 racing bikes. Ralf Holden was second, James Devereau third, Kiera Prentice fourth, James Scott fifth and Frank Kinnish sixth. Nathan Slack led chasers Callum Salisbury and Mairi Harrison in for seventh.

There was lots of attacking in the U-14 & U-16 racing bikes, with a small nucleus of riders providing most of the action. Adam Kelly made several attempts to get away in the closing stages but was reeled in each time.

With no further attacks forthcoming the leaders resigned themselves to a sprint finish which Tosh Teare won ahead of Max Walker and the hard working Kelly. The ever improving Adam Scarffe pipped Harry Cain for fourth and James Harrison, who at one time was in danger of being dropped, did well to hang onto sixth. Darcy Cain was the best girl in 16th place.
