Silver for Mark Cavendish in Omnium, Laura Trotts leads Women’s Omnium and James & Marchant through to 1/4 finals of sprint
Olympics: Day 5 Track Cycling
It was an eventful night in the Points race of the Men’s Omnium where Mark Cavendish achieved the goal of winning an Olympic medal, Silver. In other events, The Women’s Omnium is being dominated by Laura Trott, surely the best female track cyclist of her generation if not ever and in the Women’s Sprint, Becky James and Kay Marchant continue their race for a medal in the Women’s sprint.
Men’s Omnium
It was an eventful night in the Points race of the Men’s Omnium where Mark Cavendish achieved the goal of winning an Olympic medal; Silver. The Manx Missile is the Best road sprinter the country has ever had, a legend or icon even from the Tour de France, and has also won World titles on the track but the one thing that has eluded him is the Olympic medal and that goal has now been achieved.
Winner of the race was Italy’s Elia Viviani with defending champion Lasse Hansen of Denmark getting the Bronze. Cavendish told BBC Sport: “I’m happy. Elia was the best guy there. If you take the points I lost in the elimination, I would’ve been right with him.”
“I have got my Olympic medal. It is really nice but gold would have finished the collection. I don’t think I’ll be going for Tokyo but you never know.”
It wasn’t however the medal that was the talking point but the race where it was achieved, the Points race, where Cavendish collided with South Korea’s Sanghoon Park. That led to three riders, including Viviani, coming off their bikes with 109 laps to go. The race had to be briefly neutralised before the Italian could get back on his bike, while Park was taken to hospital.
“It was my fault, I should have been looking where I was going a bit more,” said Cavendish, who cut down the banking of the track in front of Park. “I hope he [Park] is all right, really. I apologised to Elia when he went down.”
In defence of Cavendish, the winner Viviani said “It’s not his fault. The Korean guy was halfway on his wheel to the right – normally you stay on the wheel. Cav was in the front and changed direction so it’s all normal. It’s a normal crash on the track.”
Cavendish started the second day of the Omnium in third place but an excellent sixth in the 1km time trial in a time of 1:02.868 lifted the Manxman to 126 points. Third in the flying lap in 12.793 seconds lifted him to 162 points and the silver-medal position ahead of the Points race, where he held on to that position.
Trott on Fire in Women’s Omnium
Two wins and a second in the Women’s Omnium shows just how great a rider Laura Trott is and no surprise she leads overall after three events. Trott was second in the opening round, the Scratch race behind Tatsiana Sharakova who won the race by gaining a lap on the field.
In the Pursuit, yet again the British rider put down a time, like Cavendish did in the men’s, that was simply World Class for the event never mind the Omnium, a personal best of 3:25.054.
To do that, Trott beat five-time world champion Sarah Hammer. Trott then finished off with her favourite event, the elimination race to win her second race of the night.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Sprint, Becky James and Katy Marchant booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Sprint with victories in the 1/8 final. Fastest qualifier James was too strong for France’s Virginie Cueff whilst Marchant was forced into a long sprint as Miriam Welte surprised the Team GB rider with an early attack with three laps to go. Marchant was able to bridge the gap the French girl opened however and just get past in the final metres of the race.  … continued after advert
