Andy Nichols and Robert Fowler winners in the North Midlands Road race League on the Dinnington circuit
Report & Results: North Midlands RRL
The tenth races of this year’s NMRRL featured Groups A & B for the final races on the Dinnington circuit.
Words by Martin Ellis
It was all action from the start in the Group A with Joe Elwood (Langsett Cycles RT) holding a narrow lead over the rest of the field at the end of the 1st lap and a lap later it was the turn of Ashley Brown (BBM Revolution) to hold a slender lead. At half distance, it was all change again, with Luke Allen (Sheffrec CC) opening up a 12 second gap, but Allen’s luck was about to run out as a puncture was soon to cut short his escape and race.
With 2 laps to go, another breakaway consisting of Andy Nichols (Langsett Cycles RT) & Dan Stephenson (Out of the Saddle CC) had opened up a significant gap with Jamie Tune (Bikeboxalan) trying to get across to the leading duo.
At the bell, Nichol & Stephenson had increased their advantage to 45 seconds over a chasing group consisting of Brown, Steve Ellis & Jack Stephenson (both Out of the Saddle CC) with the bunch a further 40 seconds back.
Nichols outsprinted Stephenson to take his first win of this year’s series with Jack Stephenson winning the sprint for 3rd place ahead of Ellis & Brown, 49 seconds down on Nichols. Elwood won the sprint for 6th place ahead of Rob Mitchell (Out of the Saddle CC) a further 48 seconds back.
With only one race left, Jack Stephenson’s 3rd place enabled him to increase his lead in the Group A Overall Standings with Nichol’s win moving him into 2nd place, 10 points behind. Mitchell is 3rd just one point behind Nichols & Dan Stephenson just one point further back & defending champion, Elwood still in contention.
The Group B race also saw plenty of action with Dominic Watts ( ) holding a 5 second lead at the end of the first lap. At half distance, Nick Boden (Common Lane Occasionals) opened up an 8 second gap but was soon brought back. With 2 laps to go, a new breakaway had formed featuring James Mappin (Geared Up Cycles), Robert Fowler & Adam Lathbury (both Rutland CC) with the bunch 15 seconds back.
At the bell, the leading trio had increased their lead to 24 seconds with the prospect of staying away looking good. At the finish, Fowler took the win in a closely fought sprint ahead of Mappin with Lathbury in 3rd.
Behind them, another chasing group had broken away from the bunch with Joseph Law (Broomwagon RT) just outsprinting Andrew Cutts (Team Bottrill) for 4th place with Richard Wilkinson (Rutland CC) & Graham Walton (Common Lane Occasionals) in 6th & 7th respectively, all of them half a minute down on Fowler. Boden won the bunch sprint for 8th just another 10 seconds back.
Jack Rowland (Harworth & District CC) had already secured the Group B title with 2 races to spare. With the enforced absence of 2nd placed Steve Bunting (Rutland CC), Law is now just one point behind in 3rd with Fowler’s win moving him into 4th.
