News: Oliphant – “it was never easy”

After trying, and failing to get in the break at the start when the race was pretty full on despite 200k’s ahead of them, Evan Oliphant was resigned to a stay in a group for the rest of the stage, groups which continued to grow in number through-out the stage as riders were shelled from one before joining together to form another.

Speaking in the team’s Don Amott motorhome afterwards, the Scottish rider said “it was never easy all day. From the very first climb (Sutton Bank), I was swinging and in a box from them on. I got in a decent group in the end and we just rolled round to the finish.”

“When I saw some signs saying 33%, I knew it was going to be a tough day! The hardest thing was I couldn’t get out of the saddle because it was wet and you couldn’t get traction and doing that seated was even harder. It was definitely one of the hardest courses I’ve ridden. Steep climbs one after the other.”

Evan rolled in to the finish with a group of British pros and World Tour riders as well and said even through the final climb, a stones throw of the finish, and pretty brutal, was okay as they went up as slow as they could LoL and before that were just rolling through to get round.
