Asked how it feels to win such a major race, Ethan, on the way back to England replied, “It felt great- it was a bit surreal splitting the race on the Kwaremont and then coming down the finish straight with the crowds.

Explaining how he won the race, Ethan says “I kept getting caught behind small incidents early on, but made sure I was up there when it mattered after that. I was second wheel up the Kwaremont and the tempo was high but I never went into the red.”

“We worked together and then on the main road, just after the race was in pieces, two small groups of about ten riders came together and we stayed away. I attacked them quite early, around 6k to go, but I knew they wouldn’t work together too well, and managed to stay away to win solo!”

Ethan added “I didn’t really have a plan before the race but knew it would be important to be at the front when I needed to be”.

Talking about the atmostphere riding in Belgium at the start of the classics season, Ethan says “It was very nervous at the start (170 or so riders) with it being most riders’ first race including myself. There were quite a few supporters on the finishing loop which was good fun.

Asked what the key moment was, Ethan says “The key moments would have to be the split on the Kwaremont and my final attack”.

Finally, how does a race like the compare with others he’s ridden? “I did this race last year but got held up at a level crossing! It is a bit longer than most junior races which is a bit strange for a season opener. It was tough for sure, but I forgot about that very quickly when I had my hands in the air!”
