Sam Allan more than made up for last week’s disappointment and the Southern Championships by winning the latest round of the Wessex League promoted by Fareham Wheelers with support from Solent Cycles at the YMCA centre just outside of Southampton.

Allan led the race from start to finish and extending his lead on each lap, finally winning by nearly two minutes. The race venue at the YMCA provided the race with a mixture of woodlands and grass fields and the resent rain added an element of standing water in places. The course cut up quickly making it tricky to ride and very muddy.

The race started with a long run out missing the first copse to allow the riders to thin out, the copse was put in on the second lap and this where most of the thick mud was forcing riders to dismount and shoulder their bikes.

Allan quickly opened out a lead over Alex Forrester (Zapnet) and by the third lap his lead was nearly 40secs. Joe Hickerton (Eden Veranda) along with team mate Matt Macdonald was third and fourth with Scott Chappell (Behind the Bikeshed) in fifth.

Behind these there was a tussle as Chris Minter (PedalOn) started to climb the leader board and was soon on the wheel of Chappell.

Whilst all the leading places remained the same until the finish the scrap between Minter and Chappell went right to the last lap. Chappell riding and Mountain bike was able to ‘bunny hop’ the log in the woods whilst Minter chose to dismount and this was all he needed to break away to take the place.

Another rider looking exercise demons of last week was Dan Guest (Performance Cycles) and he quickly made amends by opening a lead over the first junior Josh Hooper (Primera Sport) with Graham Rogerson (Cotswold Veldrijden) right on his wheel. The top places were filled out with three vets and three juniors in equal numbers.

Whilst Guest stretched his lead Rogerson made it past Hooper with junior riders Charlie Cooper (Eden Veranda) and Ed Gronbech (Oxford City RC) holding Nick Onslow (PedalOn) just outside the top six. The first six places remained the same for the remainder of the race with Guest‘s winning margin being over a minute.

The vet 50+ race was won by Tim Costello (VC Vecchi) although he was pushed all the way to the line by Kevin Holloway (VC 10). Chris Hutchings (VC Venta) spent most of the race holding off team mate Malcolm Cross, which he managed to do until the final lap when he managed to get a gap and pulled clear by 7secs on the line.

Sarah Barber (NHRC) continued her dominance of the women’s league by putting in a very quick first lap opening out a gap of 90secs over her team mate Susan Parker who in turn was 40secs clear of Natasha Reddy (RP Racing) the first junior.

Making a return to racing Claire Smith (Cotswold Veldrijden) was quickly climbing up the leader board after a slow start coming from a un seeded grid position. Smith was not in the top ten for most of the race but soon found the conditions to her liking soon passing many on her way to a fine sixth and first vet women.

Erin Baker (Team Milton Keynes) was a clear winner of the youth race pulling out a huge lead on the opening lap and never looked like losing it throughout. Amy Perryman (Solent Pirates) was the winner of the youth women’s race.
