Joe Clark edged out Adam Kenway by .2 second to win the Monsall Hill Climb in Derbyshire on Sunday. Lou Bates won the Women’s event
Report & Result – Monsal Hill Climb
On a yet another cracking day at Monsal Head in Derbyshire, one of the country’s leading Hill Climbs took place with yet another big crowd lining the climb to see the action.
Winner Joe Clark (Box Alan / Envelopemaster).
The event was well over subscribed and on the day almost 150 riders took part including a rider on a penny farthing! With the sun shining on the event, there were all manner of bikes under the riders as they sprinted up the short sharp climb.
I am sure there were more fixies in this year’s event than the year before but not as many as in Malcolm Elliott’s day with the record holder explaining that most riders back when he set the record in the 80’s were on fixed wheel bikes.
Modern bikes however have many advantages such as allowing riders to change gear out of the saddle and not have to reach down to a gear lever on the down tube. The weight of the geared bikes now is also as light if not lighter than the fixed wheeled bikes of old.
Dame Sarah Storey (3rd), Lou Bates(1st) and Jessie Walker (2nd)
Unsurprisingly then, it was a geared bike that won the race powered by Joe Clark of Team Bikebox/Envelopemaster who edged out Adam Kenway of Sportgrub Kuota who’s bike was just 5.5 kilos. In third was a season fatigued Jack Pullar (Starley Primal) whilst the first fixie was the ever popular Russell Downing in his last outing for Cult Energy.
In the Women’s race, the big stars were upstaged by Lou Bates (Carnac) who beat last years winner Jessie Walker of Servetto Footon who arrived at the event not so fresh from the road worlds the week before and Dame Sarah Storey (Pearl Izumi Sports Tours). All round it was yet another great success from Marc Edges and Sheffrec CC.
After the presentation, winner Joe Clark explained how in 2014, he crossed the line feeling he could have ridden harder. “People were telling me I needed to get it all out on the middle part of the climb and hold on through the crowd at the top and I think I did that perfectly today.â€
“Winning was a surprise though. I have been doing short efforts last week and this week to prepare for the event.†Joe will now be looking ahead to the British championships in Yorkshire in a few weeks.
Adam Kenway of Sportgrub Kuota has been making a habit of winning hill climbs of late and went close on Monsal. He explained if you are going to do it, do it properly and so went to town on his Kuota bike to bring the weight down. I changed the bars to time trial ones with TT shifters, took the big chain ring and front mech off and tried to get the weight down on it as much as possible.â€
Adam Kenway of Sportgrub Kuota
He did however make an error putting a new rear block on without a new change and suffered as a consequence with the old chain not working well on the new rear sprockets. “The race had a worthy winner with Joe though†added said. “I have won five hill climbs this year and a road race yesterday to get my Elite licence.â€
Adam then explained he has a race on the nationals course next weekend adding it will be interesting to see how he goes on a course three times the length of Monsal Head.
Jack Pullar finally was disappointed with third, explaining that his time was not as good as his previous ones on the climb with the time for 2015 six seconds slower than his best.
“It’s been a long season with the Prems, Tour Series and I’ve just come back from a break as well and was ill this week too so it was not great prep. This is a pretty amazing hill climb and considering it’s in the middle of no-where, it’s amazing they get these big crowds. The climb is hard to pace because it’s so short, you don’t know whether to get it all out at the bottom and hang on or leave a bit for the top because of how steep it is. If you don’t get it right, you can lose a lot of secondsâ€.
Jack Pullar of Velosure Starley Primal Pro Cycling
“I think this is the shortest hill climb I have done with the BEC CC one the next longest which is about 20 seconds longer and both are pretty special hill climbs.†Jack added that Monsal is the season done for him and he’ll back with a new team in 2016.
