Report & Results: Isle of Man’s Youth League
(thanks Dot Tilbury)
A heavy shower just before the action got underway failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the 280 competitors who took part in round 13 of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth league. Fortunately, the rain soon abated and the full race programme went ahead in dry and sometimes sunny conditions.
Abigail Cowell continued her domination of the novices class, powering away from the field to notch up her sixth success of the series. Nicole Astell-Burt overcame Oliver Schofield in the tussle for the runners-up spot and Joel Prentice outgunned Evie Jones, Abi Cullington and Luke Campbell in the dash for fourth. Jack Monaghan came from behind to snatch eighth from Tyler Oakley-Cowie, Jasper Whalley and Erin Morgan, with Cameron Eyres holding off George Lee, Harry Quayle and Evie Wright in the race for 12th. Newcomer Paul Naude was a very good 18th.
In the born 2010 & later age group Kylan Murphy edged out breakaway partner Brad Le Geyt to bag maximum points for the second week in succession. Daniel Minay was a safe third and Joshua Cross stayed clear of chasers Dylan Bullock, Archie Mulholland and top girl Amelie Geldart to grab fourth. Oliver Kellett beat Hugh Osborn and Thomas Kellett to the line for eighth, while Harrison Skillan overtook Jack Edwards, Conor Madsen-Mygdal and Noah Hughes in the closing stages to claim 11th. Beth Christian pipped Jayjay Plowman in the bunch sprint for 15th spot.
Cameron Hounsell scored his maiden win in the born 2009 category, attacking from the gun and taking the chequered flag with a sizeable advantage over leading girl Abi Clayton, who in turn finished well clear of chasers May-Saa Smith, Zach Jones and Sean Crone in third to fifth places respectively. Thomas Pickavance was a lonely sixth and Jonah Kenny kept the fast finishing Henry Dormer at bay in the rush for seventh. Kyle Roosenbroek was ninth and Thomas Radcliffe ousted Florrie Thomas and Jarno Davidson in the scrap for the final spot on the top ten leader board.
Three breakaway riders contested the sprint at the end of the born 2008 event, with Myles Le Geyt just getting the better of Alec Sorby and T.J.Teare in the lunge for the line. Freddie Griffin, Fearne Bregazzi and Charlotte Geldart trailed in separately to complete the top six, while Edward Field was too quick for Charlie Williams, Ryan Nelson and Leon Murphy in the dash for seventh. Ella Darnill rode away from Tiana Kelly and Chloe Schofield to secure 11th.
In the 2007 race Cian Howard went from the gun and time trialled to another impressive solo victory. Orry Lund escaped from fellow chasers Rio Kelly and Charlie Scarffe to snatch second and Florence Griffin led James Kinrade in for fifth. Jemma Quayle was a solid seventh and Jordan Carter maintained station in front of Matthew Edwards and Ella Skillan to nab eighth.
Ivan Sorby clipped off the front of a leading group of twelve riders in the born 2006 class and soloed to victory. Tom Caine outsprinted Charlie Teare for second and Harry Callin retained fourth in front of pursuers Samuel Devereau, Nathan Kinrade, Sophie Smith and Tom Darnill. Jack Christian and Lucy Field rounded off the top ten.
Tyler Annis took the five-strong bunch gallop to fill the top slot in the born 2005 three lapper. Oliver Corkish was a close second followed by James Scott, Mairi Harrison and Leo Hayes. In the following born 2004 & earlier grouping James Devereau beat fellow frontrunners Nathan Slack, Shellan Leeming and Matthew Black in the final dart for the line. Ellie Warren and Emily Kinley wrapped up the top six.
In the under 10 racing bikes Cian Jackson got the better of series leader Niall Colquitt in the final rush for the line. Drystan Sewell was a close third with Owen Collins, Ivan Sorby, Cian Howard and Mairi Harrison just behind in fourth to seventh places. Tyler Annis came out on top in the chasing bunch sprint for eighth.
In the hotly contested under 12’s class Zac Walker took the honours by a tyre’s width from Tyler Hannay, after they had broken away together on the second of the six laps. Matthew Cooil did well to bridge the gap across to the leaders on the last lap but was unable to challenge in the sprint after his monumental effort and had to settle for a well-deserved third. Jonty Bregazzi outran Ralf Holden and Matthew Black in the tussle for fourth, while James Devereau led the second wave of chasers in for seventh.
Three riders escaped in the early stages of the under 16 racing bikes and proceeded unchallenged to the finish where Thomas Bostock took the sprint from Will Draper and Adam Kelly. An eleven strong chasing group were in the fight for fourth with the ever improving Ben Christian getting the verdict from Tosh Teare and Daniel Scarffe. The girls’ prize went to Eleanor Davies in 13th place.
