Stage 13 lucky for Greg van Avermaet as he denies Peter Sagan whilst Froome holds onto Yellow as the weather cooks the riders
Tour de France – Stage 13
Stage 13 looked set in the stone for Peter Sagan to win atop the hill of the avenue de Saint-Pierre in Rodez. It was a spectacular finish but the Slovakian champion who hasn’t claimed a stage of the Tour de France since two years ago, was second again as he lost the final sprint to Greg van Avermaet (BMC).
The Belgian, third in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix this year, is also known for often making the top three but seldom winning. He finally took a well deserved victory.
A peloton of 175 riders started stage 13 in Muret. Four of them rode away from the gun: Alexandre Geniez (FDJ), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Cyril Gautier (Europcar) and Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo). They were joined at km 5 by Nathan Haas (Cannondale-Garmin) and Pierre-Luc Périchon (Bretagne-Séché Environnement).
Sky had their work made easier as Giant-Alpecin team took command of the peloton to prevent the time gap from increasing significantly. Firstly, they didn’t allow Perrig Quémeneur (Europcar) and Andriy Grivko (Astana) to bridge the gap to the six leaders.
The maximum difference before the intermediate sprint at Laboutarié (km 92.5) was 3.40 where the sprint of the peloton was won by André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) who virtually moved back into the lead of the points classification.
Serious crash for Péraud
The advantage of Alexandre Geniez (FDJ), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Cyril Gautier (Europcar), Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo), Nathan Haas (Cannondale-Garmin) and Pierre-Luc Périchon (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) went up to 4.45 with 84km to go. Giant-Alpecin continued to set the pace of the bunch for 110km, after which Tinkoff-Saxo took over when they hit the hills over the remaining 70 kilometres.
Crosswinds and tension in the bunch created some splits whilst Jean-Christophe Péraud (AG2R-La Mondiale) sustained a serious crash at km 137 but courageously restarted and made his way back to the peloton after 15km of chasing.
As the bunch, led by Tinkoff-Saxo and occasionally MTN-Qhubeka and Orica-GreenEdge, Aussie Haas attacked with 24km to go. The double winner of the Japan Cup remained alone in the lead for six kilometres.
Kelderman, Gautier and De Gendt then made a leading trio 14km before the finish and were caught with only 300 metres to go in the uphill finish. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) followed the right wheel when Greg van Avermaet (BMC) distanced the other sprinters, John Degenkolb and co, but in the last violent effort, the Belgian made the winning jump.
Chris Froome (Sky), sixth on the line, retained the yellow jersey.

Greg van Avermaet:Â “This victory means a lot to me. It’s a big one. Finally I’ve made it after missing out on several occasions, especially at the classics. I came to the Tour to win a stage. I targeted the first week. Then I survived the Pyrenees with today’s stage in mind and I’ve succeeded. At 200 metres to go, I felt someone was on my wheel but I didn’t know who it was”.
“When I realized it was Peter Sagan, I was hoping that he wouldn’t come around me. The last one hundred metres was very long but I’m happy that I stayed away. I certainly don’t have any advice for Sagan as I have the same problems as him. It’s difficult to win at this level. The only advice is too keep trying. Sagan remains one of the hardest riders to beat.”
“I have a big respect for him. It’s nice for cycling to have a rider like him. I’m maybe not the guy who wins twenty races a year but I’m always aiming at six or seven victories every season. I’m at four this year and there’s still a long season ahead. I could have done better. The classics will always be my number one goal. The level of my win today will give me the confidence I need for the future.”
Peter Sagan: “I was waiting for too long! It’s my mistake. I have to thank my team for the good job done before the sprint but my mistake was to sit down behind him [Greg van Avermaet] instead of passing him straight away and continue my effort till the finishing line. I’ve increased my lead in the green jersey classification but that wasn’t my priority today. I also want victories.”
Chris Froome: It could have been an easier day but it was a mad dash in the last 40km as sprinters’ teams panicked when they realized they might not catch the breakaway. I’ve seen very tired legs in the bunch, given the last three stages we’ve just done. Many people were hoping for an easy day but it didn’t happen. The heat was close to 40°.”
“We were asking for bidons and there wasn’t enough. In a day like this, I’d like to feel safe at the 3km to go mark and then give way to the sprinters but in the finale, everyone wanted to be at the front: lead out men for their sprinter, team-mates of GC riders, then it was chaos at the bottom of the final climb”.
“All you need is one GC guy to go to the front and everyone has to go up there as well. Typical sprinters want more opportunities but I don’t have any complain about the route. Seeing that even today some riders have tried to attack me in a short climb like this, it means they’ll try more tomorrow. Mende is a 3-km climb where big gaps can be expected.”
Nairo Quintana: “It was another day of terrible heat, with lots of small climbs, some points where winds blew hard… the day wasn’t really easy. That makes a harder impact as we’re still suffering from the Pyrenees. Our objective during the next few days will be recovering as much as we can and find the Alps in order to attack, but we’re conscious that there are no easy days and there could be some battle tomorrow.”
“Difficult finishes are still to come before the rest day, with roundabouts, descents… and likely crashes force us to keep entirely focused and at the front. We’ll all keep working to avoid any troubles and, if necessary, surely Alejandro will help me out to leave Froome alone into the last week. But there’s much remaining before that.”
Tejay van Garderen: “The plan was to watch dangerous breaks and to stay safe and then Greg had a free role in the sprint,” van Garderen said. “It’s incredible. We are really on a roll this Tour with the team time trial win and Rohan Dennis winning the individual time trial and now Greg taking our third stage. I think we are on our way to a successful tour.”
