Chaos on the road to Zélande as roundabouts split the race as Greipel wins the stage and Cancellera takes 29th yellow jersey
Tour de France – Stage 2
(Report for stage 1)
Greipel strikes in Zealand, Cancellara moves into the lead  – double blow for Quickstep
Stage 2 showed that a sprint stage can be every bit as interesting as the mountain stages, probably more so as the chaos in this stage proved.
Raced like a Spring classic in windy and wet conditions, there were significant gaps between the hot favorites for the overall classification. Chris Froome and Alberto Contador made the front group in which André Greipel proved to be the fastest against Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish while Fabian Cancellara, third, moved into the overall lead.
Vincenzo Nibali and Nairo Quintana lost 1.28 to their rivals.
Andre Greipel: “Our group never slowed down but we saved a bit of energy. With 2km to go, I told Tony [Gallopin] and Marcel Sieberg to wait as long as possible because I felt the head wind”.
“Sieberg always knows which one is the right wheel to follow. He’s not just a good rider, he’s my best friend. I know him since I started cycling. He’s a really smart rider.”
“It means a lot to have him in a team. I’ve seen a high number of Quick Step riders in our group but Mark Renshaw opened the sprint too early. He forced Cavendish to go early too but I wasn’t confident yet because Cavendish has showed in the past that he was able to keep that speed for a long time and win that way”.
“But I was also able to stay on his wheel and pass him. There was a possibility to have a German stage winner and a German yellow jersey today but I don’t know what happened to Tony [Martin], I’m just happy with my first stage victory only on the second day of the Tour de France.”
“Tomorrow it’ll be my first time in the green jersey at the Tour de France and I will enjoy it before thinking of targeting it”.
The Race
Armindo Fonseca (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) was the first attacker of the Tour de France as soon as race director Christian Prudhomme flagged off at the exit of Utrecht where 198 riders took the start of stage 2. Perrig Quémeneur (Europcar), Jan Barta (Bora-Argon 18) and Stef Clement (IAM Cycling) rejoined him.
They got a maximum advantage of 2.45 at km 28 while Etixx-Quick Step took control of the chase straight away. As they passed through the 50k mark, gusts of wind inspired Tinkoff-Saxo to create echelons. Until the intermediate sprint at Rotterdam (km 80.5), there was a lot of action, with the likes of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Bauke Mollema (Trek) temporarily in trouble.
At the front, Barta rode away solo in the streets of Rotterdam to win the intermediate sprint and the race was all together with 62km to go, preceding a series of accelerations and with 50km to go, the peloton was split into pieces.
Twenty six riders including Chris Froome, Alberto Contador, Tejay van Garderen, Peter Sagan, Mark Cavendish, André Greipel, Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara composed a front group while many top contenders couldn’t avoid the pitfall.
Vincenzo Nibali, Nairo Quintana, Thibaut Pinot and yellow jersey holder Rohan Dennis were forced to chase. Nibali had a flat tyre with 25km to go but made it back into the chasing group. Despite the combination of forces, they never came across to the leaders and conceded 1.28 on the finishing line.
As Etixx-Quick Step outnumbered the other teams in the front group, Cavendish looked in the best position for the sprint on the causeway in Neeltje Jans. Renshaw led him out and Cavendish hit out at 300 to go with Greipel and Sagan on his wheel. Whilst Cavendish struggled hold his speed, Greipel and Sagan dueled for the win with Cancellera coming off the wheels to beat Cavendish for third and take a bonus which would give Fabian the Yellow jersey.
For Sagan, it was a great effort especially after he’d punctured with 12k to go and even without a big convoy to help him back, he managed by hook or by crook to do just that and contest the finish.
Afterwards Cancellera explained he had nothing to prove but still rode his bike to do big things and they don’t come much bigger than the jellow jumper in the Tour de France. It was 11 years that he first wore yellow and he admits that his defeat on stage 1 gave him a lot of motivation when he found himself in the front group.
For Etixx Quickstep, the stage saw a double blow, Cavendish losing and finishing 4th whilst Tony Martin missing yellow because of the time bonus for Cancellera. One can only imagine the fireworks for the stage tomorrow that finishes on top of the Muur …
Reactions
Chris Froome “This a huge advantage for us to be sitting in this position after on flat day out on the road. But this is a three-weeks race and things do change on a daily basis. We’re ahead today but who knows what’s in store for us for the rest of the week.â€
“I’m very thankful to my team-mates for keeping me in front all day and especially when it mattered, when the split took place. Two days gone now and I couldn’t really hope for moreâ€, he said. Froome said he was surprised to learn that the other leaders, and especially title-holder Vincenzo Nibali had been dropped.
“It was chaos out there with the storm, the wind and everything. One second, Nibali was next to me and the next I couldn’t believe it when I heard he was distanced. It’s the nature of racing here in Holland. When we found out, myself and Alberto [Contador] talked on our bikes, and he was saying ‘we’ve got the gap so let’s commit to this move and both buy into it’. We got BMC Racing to do the same because they had Tejay [van Garderen] up there as well. We were all aware of the situation”.
The Briton singled Geraint Thomas and Ian Stannard as the team-mates who most helped him in these tricky conditions. “This is their playground, this type of classic style stage with crosswinds and rain. They definitely proved their worth today.â€
Following the stage, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) says he was satisfied with the outcome. “I’m happy with the way we raced today”. “It was a day where one could build time advantages. It’s a pity there was number of teams such as BMC or Sky that didn’t start working until late in the stage. However, at the end they gave us a hand and I’m satisfied with the result”.
“Regards myself, it wasn’t very tiring and in addition we avoided having any crashesâ€, says Alberto Contador, who had Sagan, Bennati, Rogers and Kreuziger alongside him in the diminished front group:
“I would like to thank my teammates for their work and the focus is now on recovering tonight as we have another difficult stage ahead of us tomorrow. It’s always good to have a few of the main rivals behind me in the GC than at the front but we still have a long way ahead of us and I think the advantage I have today will mean nothing by the end of the Tourâ€, added Alberto Contador.
Geraint Thomas told ITV4 “The crash came after the intermediate sprint. Someone fell over my back wheel and that cracked my frame but I had a quick bike change and got back to the front just fine. We knew after 108km the crosswinds would come, but the storm meant it was really hard to see where we were going”.
“There were crashes everywhere, but fortunately we were at the front and the three of us were able to make that split. It was great to gain that time on some of Froomey’s rivals.
We were so focused on staying upright, and staying at the front, that we didn’t pay much attention to who was dropped initially – it was only 10km down the road when we heard the news”.
“That was nice, and because there were only three of us from Team Sky, we let Etixx – Quick-Step ride initially and then got BMC Racing to help us, and it all worked out a treat. I’ve only just learned how big the gap was and that’s perfect for us at this stage in the race.â€
Nairo Quintana – A pile-up by some riders strung out with 50km remaining saw Quintana out of position and forced the whole Movistar squad, Malori, Dowsett, Gorka Izagirre, Erviti, Castroviejo and Anacona to chase the leaders and keep the gap around a minute. “All those crashes in the rain were a bit unlucky for us,” said Quintana.
“We lost a bit of time, but we hope to get it back, day by day. We managed to keep the squad together and joined forces with Astana’s and kept the gap closer than it could have been.”
Valverde admits it hadn’t been a good day. “It was really complicated due to the foul weather and stressful. The important thing is that we didn’t crash and everything has just started. “Nairo was at the front with Dowsett but the group started to split in the crosswinds, it also started to rain, another crash happened, we turned left towards a wind-exposed zone and echelons kept forming and forming until all of us were trailing behind. From that point on, there was nothing to do but chasing.”
