News – Wiggle Honda for Aviva Women’s Tour
Women’s pro cycling team Wiggle Honda have announced four of their riders for the Aviva Women’s Tour, which starts on Wednesday 17th June with a team led by double World Champion and fourth overall last year Giorgia Bronzini.
The team currently sits second in the UCI World Rankings and will be keen to lay down a marker in their home tour for the rest of the packed season ahead which includes the team competing in a number of high profile events including the Giro Rosa, La Course and the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix in London.
Amongst the first riders to book their place on the Aviva Women’s Tour roster was 2010 and 2011 World Road Race Champion Giorgia Bronzini. The Italian enjoyed three podium finishes before finishing fourth overall in the general classification of the inaugural UCI 2.1 ranked stage race held last year.
A crowd favourite, Olympic Champion and three time women’s team pursuit World Champion, Britain’s Dani King is the next rider also confirmed. She recently came back to full-time racing after sustaining multiple broken ribs in a training accident in last November, winning her first comeback race, the first stage of the Tour of the Reservoir in Northumberland this April.
A new rider to the Wiggle Honda team in 2015, Elisa Longo Borghini, winner of the Ronde van Vlaanderen UCI World Cup round this Spring. Having finished the 2014 Tour Tour 25th overall at the young age of 23, Longo Borghini has gone on to finish in the top five of three World Cup rounds this year, most recently as runner up behind Lizzie Armitstead at the weekend’s Philly Cycling Classic in the USA.
The last of the four riders to be confirmed at the time of this release is 2015 Belgian National Road Race Champion and winner of this year’s opening UCI Women’s World Cup round the Ronde van Drenthe, Jolien D’Hoore, who will be making her debut in the race.
The final two riders for the Wiggle Honda squad will be confirmed ahead of the race, which starts next Wednesday (17 June).
Highlights of each stage will be shown on ITV4 every evening during the race at 8pm with a repeat on the same channel the following morning.
Already announced for the Aviva Women’s Tour are the Bigla Pro Cycling team led by reigning Strava Queen of the Mountains Sharon Laws and Dutch Champion Iris Slappendel and UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling, with the American team confirming Northamptonshire’s Hannah Barnes and Commonwealth Champion Linda Villumsen will be among their six rider line-up.
Fans will have their first chance to see the teams in the Aviva Women’s Tour team presentation, which will take place in Bury St Edmunds from 5pm on Tuesday 16 June, before the town hosts the opening stage start the following morning.
Stage One on Wednesday 17 June will finish at Aldeburgh on the Suffolk Coast, before the race again passes through Suffolk a day later between Braintree and Clacton in Essex.
