Report – John Andrews Memorial RR

Sunday 7th June | from Graham Robins

Daniel Halksworth (Velo Sport Jersey) made it a good weekend and worthy of the trip across the channel after a fourth in yesterday’s race at the PNECC race in Hampshire he swapped counties and was on the top of the podium in the nice Somerset sunshine.

The race promoted by Yeovil CC on the race circuit near to Long Sutton. The race was 12 laps with a total of 65miles including the run to the finish line which wasn’t part of the main race circuit. The morning started under bright blue skies with just a hint of a breeze but clouded over towards the end.

After the initial neutralised section the riders turned right onto the course to start the twelve laps. Despite the high pace of the early couple of laps there wasn’t anyone prepared to break clear until the third lap when we had a three man break.

The leading three riders Paul Double (VC Venta), James Cartridge (Bath CC) and Calum Croft (Primera-Sports.com had another couple Charlie Revell (Somerset RC) and Sam Barker (Bikeshed-Exeter Uni) a few seconds behind but the peloton were 30secs down. On the next lap Barker and Revell slipped back towards the bunch only to be replaced by Rhys Williams (Swansea Uni) with the peloton still hanging around at 30secs.

The climb on the next lap was the downfall for the leaders as the gaps tumbled and the race all came back together. It then took most of the next lap for the riders to organise another attack and as they turned out of Upton onto the main road four riders put in a dig and got away from the bunch by 40secs. This attack seemed to upset the rhythm and gaps started to appear in the bunch which help the four build a lead quickly.

On the ninth lap the leaders Kieran Ellis (Bristol South CC), Jason Poore (Mid Devon CC), Huw Williams (Tavistock Whlrs) and Daniel Halksworth extended their lead over a group of chasers by 40secs and the bunch now at 1min 20secs down. The peloton slipped further back on the next couple of laps as they re-organised themselves.

As the race approached the final couple of laps the four leaders had what looked like an un catchable 1min 25secs gap over a hard working group of ten and the peloton now over 2mins adrift. At the bell the lead gap was down to 1min as the peloton regrouped and started to hunt down the four leaders. Half way around the lap Jason Poore was swept up and the bunch could now see the escapees just up the road. But as hard as they tried Halksworth and Richards just managed to hold off the fast moving peloton by 10secs on the line. James Curson won the bunch kick as he led the remainder of the bunch across the line.
