News – Trott on Track for Rio 2016

LAURA Trott still pinches herself at the fact she is a double Olympic champion, but the 23-year-old insists the current reality is that she is on track to deliver two more in Rio next year. With the qualification process having begun after the World Championships back in February, Trott is one of a number of GB riders looking to secure enough points to earn herself a plane ticket to Brazil.

But with qualification events occurring all the way up until June of next year, including Track Cycling World Cup events in Colombia and New Zealand, the security of nailing down a spot is some way off.

Victory in the Tour Series and the prestigious Milk Race this year, already proves Trott’s early-season training is paying off, while next on the agenda is the defence of her British Road Championship title in Lincolnshire.

And having started to reap the rewards of a strength and conditioning training phase, she insists things are progressing at the right pace a year out from hopefully securing a spot in Rio.

“So far this year, my training has been going well. I have done a few races and they have also gone pretty well,” said Trott, speaking at the SW19 WI branch of the Women’s Institute in Wimbledon to encourage more women to take up cycling.

“We are in a bit of a strength phase at the minute, we are doing a lot of work in the gym and a lot of road miles so it has been quite hard. You never really see the gains for a period of time but it is starting to come through now, which I am really happy about”.

“Obviously, this year we are qualifying for the Olympics so since February we have been doing events to try and qualify. We won’t actually know if we have qualified until June but for now everything is focusing on Rio and hopefully we are going in the right direction”.

“My next big event is the Nationals, which is in three weeks time. I am going to defend my title and it is actually quite a good course for me but we will see what happens. I am really excited about the thought of Rio and looking forward to the training ahead.”

“The Worlds was a little disappointing coming away with two silvers instead of two golds but we’ve got a plan in place and I believe in it so hopefully we will be able to achieve what we did in London.”

Trott was also at the Women’s Institute to promote this summer’s Prudential RideLondon event, with three members of the SW19 WI branch receiving their official event jerseys. And having conducted a Q&A session, as well as spending time chatting with WI members, Trott hopes her words will encourage more women to have a go on two wheels.

“I wanted to inspire the lovely ladies to go out and ride their bikes,” she added. “It is such a great way of getting some fitness, some fresh air and maybe some of them will be inspired to take on the Prudential RideLondon this year.”

“It is such a great event because it is on closed roads so it is safe and because it is such a long way, 100 miles is obviously really far, it is good for you to set targets that are ambitious.

“They will just get a sense of achievement and that is what I want people to go out and do.”
