UK’s first closed road UWCT events proving a massive success

The UK’s first UWCT closed road Gran Fondo and Chrono Time Trial, the Enervit Tour of Cambridgeshire on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June, is proving very popular with over 6,000 cyclists from the UK and Europe coming to Peterborough for the event.

The closed road Enervit Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo on Sunday 7th June 2015 is proving a hit with many thousands of cyclists coming to Peterborough for the event. 6,000 people have already entered with nearly half that number coming from Cambridgeshire and adjoining counties.

The bulk of the rest of the riders are from the UK and Ireland with the recent awarding of UWCT qualifying status increasing the number of riders from mainland Europe as they chase qualifying spots for the UCI Amateur Road World Championships in Denmark in September.

The oldest entrant is 80 years old while the youngest is 16. Female riders are well represented with nearly 15% of the field, the majority of which are taking part in the non competitive side of the event.

The 128km closed road loop through the Cambridgeshire countryside starts and finishes in Peterborough and promises a mix of flatland with small sharp climbs similar to the terrain in Belgium. While there may not be any serious climbs on the route the main challenge on the day is likely to come from the wind as sections of the course are very exposed. Well stocked feed stations and mechanical and medical assistance along the course will look after riders during the event.

The closed road 28km Chrono time trial on Saturday 6th June was an instant hit with all 700 places selling out in less than a week. Top UK riders Matt Bottrill and Julia Shaw have visited and ridden the course and both really liked it describing it as a fast, fun course.

Both riders are looking to qualify for the UCI Amateur World TT Championships in Denmark in September (as will all those in the top 25% in their Masters age category) with Julia looking to double up and try and qualify for the UCI Amateur Road World Championships in the Gran Fondo the following day.

Tom Caldwell from organisers Vericool Sports Management says; “With 6,000 places already taken from riders across the UK and Europe, the Enervit Tour of Cambridgeshire promises to be a world class event. The response to the Gran Fondo format similar to that popular in Europe has been incredible and it will be great to see so many people on the day being competitive or simply enjoying the countryside riding on closed roads”.

Belgian cycling legend and UWCT representative Erwin Vervecken visited the area and said; “I’m really excited about the Tour of Cambridgeshire and having ridden the course I can safely say the wind and terrain are going to make for a tougher than expected course. The Gran Fondo will see thousands of cyclists take to the closed roads in the area promising a spectacular event, great for cycling in the region and the UK”.

The Enervit Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo will start and finish at the spacious Peterborough Arena with ample free parking on site for thousands of cars and easy access to road and rail networks. An expo area, catering facilities and commentators will help keep all entertained on site over the weekend. The Arena opens from 12:00 noon on Friday 5th June for registration, all day Saturday and from 6:00am on Sunday 7th June.

Online entries close at 12:00 noon on Friday 5th June, entries on the day will be accepted but with a premium surcharge and only payable in cash.
