Tyneside Vagabonds hosted the latest round of the N&DCA BAR competition on Sunday 17th May, with a 47 mile mountain time trial. The course, which started from Belsay and took in local landmarks such a Bolam, Scots Gap, Rothbury and Elsdon, saw the riders battling strong westerly winds at times and elevation gains of over 3,300 feet.

The event was, like all previous rounds in the series, very well supported by riders with a field of 115. The Mountain Time Trial is now in its 60th year, having first been held in 1947. Back then, it was a very secretive affair, with the route remaining unpublished and only a small number of riders taking part. However, its popularity has increased in recent years, thanks in no small part to the now legendary buffet which awaits riders at the end!

First, in a time of 2:03:28, was Danny Grieves of GS Metro. Fastest lady was Ingrid Shepherd of Sunderland Clarion, with the fastest vets being Ben of GS Metro (V40 class) and Paul Stubbs of Adept Precision RT (V50).

This result means that Grieves is now the joint leader of the N&DCA BAR competition, with Ingrid Shepherd leading the Vets, but it’s tightening up. The new 2015 category of Vets Team BAR looks to be already firmly in the grasp of Breeze Bikes RT.
