Live! Tour Series Aberystwyth
Round 3 of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series returns to Aberystwyth in Wales for two events, a Hill Climb and then a town centre race
After a brutal hill climb which as anybody who has done them knows, they can be a gut wrenching beast, came a crit every bit as brutal. No matter where I stood on the circuit, the riders came past attacking and at the end, only four riders survived the pain cave or had stayed upright. After the day had brightened up after early morning rain, and the circuit dried out, the rain came just as the riders lined up on the finish straight to be gridded.
The drizzle caused havoc although it is a testament to the riders bike handling skills that there were not more crashes, especially early on. The wet stuff didn’t deter attacking riding though. Some did take the safe option and after being dropped, riding round to complete the race without damaging themselves for future races and who could blame them. But so many others put their ‘cojones’ on the line.
I lost count of the amount times I’d see through the lens a rider coming into a corner ‘hot’ as the attacks continued throughout the hour and five laps.
A night in Aberystwyth at the Tour Series
Madison Genesis, Tom Scully, Matt Cronshaw, Tobyn Horton, Mike Northey, and Tom Stewart  were the team winners. No surprise as everyone of them were influential in the race and at the front attacking. Scully fell and got back up and got back again.Â
The Pearl Izumi Tour Series’ Welsh double-header round in Aberystwyth saw the Series lead twice change hands on Friday night, as ONE Pro Cycling took victory in the hill climb to move back to the top of the standings, before Madison Genesis re-took the lead following the evening criterium.
Along the way there were significant individual wins for George Harper and Ed Clancy, the former taking his first ever win in the Pearl Izumi Tour Series with the winning time in the hill climb, while the latter extended his Series record for individual wins to seven.
The race kicked off with some dancing by a local group of girls
The Olympic Champion is also now a master of Aberystwyth, becoming the first rider to win three times on the same circuit and ensuring that the JLT Condor team continue their record of an individual victory in each of the seven seasons of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.
Clancy was part of a four rider group to finally edge away in the closing quarter of the race alongside Tobyn Horton, Mike Northey and Jon Mould, although the quartet were caught with two laps to go, setting up a 16-rider dash for the line on Pier Street.
Thanks to his previous success’ in Aberystwyth, Clancy knew the correct tactic to adopt, hitting the final corner first and holding off Tom Stewart and Mould to the line. With all five Madison Genesis riders in the front group though the fastest team time of the night went comfortably to them.
Earlier in the day Harper had led ONE Pro Cycling to victory in the hill climb, recording a 3:52.744 on the 1.4km climb up Constitution Hill, beating NFTO’s Jonathan McEvoy and Madison Genesis’ Tom Stewart, with Aberystwyth local Stephen Williams of Pedal Heaven a highly creditable fourth.
That helped Pedal Heaven finish runner’s up behind ONE Pro Cycling with Madison Genesis in third, dropping to one point behind the Series leader’s, a deficit they overcame in the evening’s criterium.

On the seafront, the attacks with a few crashes as well, kept the crowd entertained
Despite the rain, the crowds came out in force yet again
This is the second or third lap and already Matt Cronshaw of Madison Genesis is giving it big licks at the front and causing splits at the back
Tobyn Horton leads Mike Northey with Madison Genesis having two in a break of four, a show of strength from the team winners on the night. Also in the move were Ed Clancy and Jon Mould
Just as he was at the start, Matt Cronshaw was at the front on the bell lap on a night he was in his element. The four leaders were caught by a chase group that never gave up but Clancy, third wheel here, was not going to be beaten to his third win in Aberystwyth. He now has seven wins in the series since it began in 2009, two more than Jon Mould who’s next on five.
Bad luck for the team leaders One Pro Cycling as they lost ground in crashes like this one for Yanto Barker who got up and kept fighting
Jon Mould of One Pro Cycling puts  Ed Clancy into the hurt locker but could not shake the double Olympic Champion
Tom Stewart of Madison Genesis has a a good lead in the Points competition after yet another strong performance for his team.
Ed Clancy of JLT Condor was on and off the podium after winning the race, the fastest lap and the Points competition on the night … phew.. what a night for the champ
Raleigh GAC team owner Cherie Pridham gets a birthday cake and the crowd singing happy birthday to her before the race.
Team winners in the Hill Climb were One Pro Cycling
Winner of the Hill Climb George Harper of One Pro Cycling gets the Costa fastest lap trophy
You can’t come to Aber and not do this shot. I didn’t stay long enough as shortly after I moved on, there were a load of crashes on the exit from the bend!
