Thomas Humphrey beats James Rutherford to the win at the 2015 Ray Levers Road Race, Diane Lee first woman
Report & Results – 2015 Ray Levers Road Race
(Matt Rodgers)
A great race held over an increased distance of 10 laps of the 3.4 mile Circuit near Stainton, Rotherham. The Starting field of 69 riders were split in to 3 handicapped groups. The long Marker set off at 10AM promt, followed by the middle markers a further 3 and half minutes later with the scratch group going off another 2 and a half minutes after them.
A lead group of 5 riders quickly established a break from the long marker group with the other two groups in hot pursuit. After around half distance the scratch group caught the middle markers which briefly slowed the pace of the scratch group for about a lap. This was decisive as it meant that the 5 break away riders now looked like they would evade capture from the rest of the peloton. The remnants of the long markers were swept up by the ever expanding peloton but the breakaway was maintaining it lead.
On the final lap Rob Watkinson of Doncaster Wheelers put in a huge attack and distanced the rest of the peloton, he came within 15 seconds of catching the 5 breakaway riders but crucially dragged the main peloton back to the breakaway riders.
4 of the original 5 breakaway riders managed to stay away with Thomas Humphrey of Kirklees Cycling Academy taking the win ahead of James Rutherford (Ominpex Race Team) and Mark Turner (Dinnington RC).
The bunch sprint swallowed up Watkinson just before the line with Joseph White (G4 Acre RT) leading the charge. Dianne Lee (Mule Bar Girl) was the first lady to cross the line coming home just behind the main peloton.
