Jake Hales & Maisie Duckworth two of the winners at the second round of the Mid Shropshire Wheelers Sports Village Circuit Races on March 29 at Shrewsbury

Mid Shropshire Wheelers Sports Village Circuit Race No. 2 |Â March 29th
(Thanks Dave Mellor)
With the weather paying no attention to the start of British Summer Time it was no surprise that rider numbers were slightly down on Race No. 1. The commissaires and organisers thought long and hard about going ahead in the wet and windy conditions but were rewarded with great competition after deciding to continue with the days racing.
Richard Wilkinson from Audlem CC was the main protagonist in the E123 Men’s race spending several laps out front alone ahead of the rest of an 8 man breakaway that formed early in the race. The strength of the wind played its part and he was pulled back before the end and a controversial sprint ensued. Ryan Davis of SportsGrub thought he had done enough for 2nd in the sprint for the line behind worthy winner Jake Hales of Spirit Racing but a puncture and lap out with 8 laps to go outside the pits resulted in relegation as he hadn’t reported to the Commissaires and was deemed a lap down.
First time racer Kelly Murphy pressed regular Shrewsbury competitor Maisie Duckworth of Wolverhampton Wheelers all the way to the line. Maybe a little too close in the finish sprint as the two riders came together and Kelly ended up on the grass but no problems as both riders chatted away on their warm down lap.
Ellie Russell, Sport City Velo/Mid Shropshire Wheelers showed a clean pair of wheels to the rest of the under 16 girls ahead of next weeks Scottish Youth Tour as she mixed it gamely with the lead group of boys. A last lap tumble didn’t affect the girls result as by that stage she was already a lap to the good.
A four rider breakaway dominated the under 16 boys with Charlie Cox crashing and needing a double wheel change before finally giving best to the other three riders. Promoting clubs Devon Round tried his best to rid himself of better sprint finishers but was beaten by Solihulls Matt Shaw and Wolverhamptons Will Lewis in the finale.
Daniel Cooper of Lichfield and Wolverhamptons Sophie White were worthy winners of the under 14s whilst promoting clubs Ben Pierce was a very popular winner of the boys under 12s. Aimee Lane of Wyre Forest got the better of regulars at Shrewsbury, Grace Lister of Wolverhampton Wheelers and Mid Shropshire Wheelers Rhiannon Tansley.
Joshua Jackson of Lyme RC and Rebecca Woodvine are no strangers to the top step of the podium at Shrewsbury and were again victorious in the under 10s. Whilst in the under 8s it was a double banger for Redditch duo Ryan Oldfield and Phoebe Strain.
Next race at this popular Mid Shropshire Wheelers venue is Sunday April 12th where again there is a guaranteed Women only race.
