Sunday, January 11, 2015
The second day of the 2015 British Cyclo-Cross Championships in Abergavenny (Wales) saw titles for:
— Grant Ferguson (Under 23 Men)
— Thomas Craig (Junior Men)
— Helen Wyman & Amira Mellor (Elite & Junior Women)
— Â Ian Field (Elite Men)
The second day of the 2015 British Cyclo-Cross Championships dawned very cold but bright and we didn’t know it then but the day was going to be packed with some great races!
The event organised by Ian Jenkins and the local clubs, saw the course changed a little and during the day, some legends in the sport just made themselves even more a legend with historic victories.
UNDER 23 MEN
The first race of the day saw a small field of Under 23 riders racing for the champion’s jersey and Derby National Trophy winner Grant Ferguson was favourite. It was Under 23 National Trophy winner Ben Sumner though that led the race away and through the woods on the opening lap.
Ferguson though was not far back and soon hit the front and opened up a gap. Behind there was a scrap between Jack Clarkson and Ben Sumner for the Silver medal for a short while and perhaps smarting from losing the Green National Trophy jersey to Sumner, Clarkson, who had such a great ride in the Milton Keynes World Cup, managed to open a gap on Sumner.
It wasn’t much, less than 30 seconds and it kept Clarkson pushing hard. The Hope rider was at one point bringing the gap down to Ferguson but the Scottish rider must have sensed it and opened the taps again and at the finish had a lead of 59 seconds over Clarkson who was pleased enough with the Silver. Sumner held on to third.

JUNIOR MEN
Joshua Waters has a big lead on lap 1, no-one in sight, but it wasn’t enough.
The next race to hit the course around the Leisure Centre was the Junior Men where Thomas Craig was the defending champion. This race early on was changing so quickly it was impossible to keep up between tweeting pictures of the race on one lap only for it to turn on its head the next.
It started with Joshua Waters opening up such a big gap that he was looking likely to run away with the race. Behind there were all sorts of dramas for riders but the race soon settled down and first to get to Waters was Alfie Moses.
Alfie Moses catches Waters but on on their heels is Thomas Craig
Hot on their heels though was Thomas Craig who is looking every bit the champion his Olympian father Nick was and still is. Craig soon caught and dropped them and whilst the defending champion looked solid on his own out front, there was a scrap between five or six riders behind. Moses soon settled on a lone chase a few seconds clear of McGuire who was being closed down by Waters.
Broken chain for Will Gascoyne dented his title hopes with a run back to the pits
Whilst Craig won the race with yet another solid performance, and Moses was second 14 seconds later, there was a battle royal for third with McGuire having to sprint hard to hold off Waters which he did 35 seconds after the title had been won by Craig.
Win for Thomas Craig, two out of two as a Junior.Â

WOMEN
Helen Wyman continues to break records and in 2015 she notched up a record ninth British title win, dominating cross in the same way Nicole Cooke dominated the road scene for so many years. The Kona rider was made to work for it and after leading Nikki Harris through the woods on lap 1, Harris attacked Wyman and gapped her for a short time.
Helen Wyman leads through the woods on lap 1.
Wyman though hit back and created a gap of her own and it was one that was never to be closed. It may have only been 30 seconds or so but Wyman looked rock solid out front and was soon crossing the line to win her ninth title. Harris, a former winner, was second whilst behind Annie Last was pushed all the way by the Junior winner, Amira Mellor with one of the races exciting ‘scraps’.
Nikki Harris puts the hammer down and gaps Wyman on lap 1.
Amira Mellor leads Annie Last in a race long battle for the bronze medal.
Big celebration from Amira Mellor after an even bigger race against the senior riders.

Title number four for Ian Field of Hargroves Cycles-Ridley
The final race of the day was probably the most exciting, at least for the first half where Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley), the three time defending champion, looked to be under pressure. The lead was changing every lap but that soon changed.
First away was Steven James (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) (above) who was said to be suffering with the dreaded cold that so many people I speak to have, including me! He may not have been breathing that well but his kept the lead for a while before Steven Roach and Liam Killeen were battling it out at the front with a gap back to a good sized chase group including Field.
Roach slipped back though and was replaced at the front by Lewis Craven on a ‘ride’. Just behind though was Ian Field, on his own, and chasing them down. Once Field was with the leaders, he gapped them and came out of the woods on the next lap well clear and the chase soon became between Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) , Liam Killeen and Lewis Craven.
Steven Roach leads the race
Craven though dropped back and was seemingly out of the medals before Crawforth parked up, either physically or mechanically and whilst Killeen took the Silver medal 38 seconds behind Field, Craven came in 15 seconds ahead of Crawforth.
Then Lewis Craven has a spell at the front.
But soon it was Ian Field who steadily caught the leaders, passed them and held onto a small lead all the way to the finish.
For several laps, Killeen and Crawforth with Craven on their heels, battled it out before the Olympian Killeen pulled away and Craven passed Crawforth to take the Bronze.
