There was a day of surprises in Derby for the final round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series. With the National Championships next weekend in Abergavenny, the podiums took on a different look to previous rounds as would be British champions tested their form against the National Trophy leaders.

In the Elite Men, there was a big surprise as British Champion Ian Field was beaten by Grant Ferguson. From the get go, Ferguson was at the front of the race with guest rider Yorben Van Tichelt whilst Field was a few seconds adrift chasing with a group of series favourites.

As the race went on, riders started to buckle under the pressure from Ferguson whilst Field drew clear of his series rivals to move into a clear second place. That was how it stayed as Ferguson scored his first win over Field in ‘cross. The Hargroves Cycles rider though was pleased with the series win and confident ahead of the big one in Abergavenny next week.

Elite women
Series Leader Amira Mellor was second to Derby’s own Annie Last who showed yet again that at the national championships she will be a force to be reckoned with. Last, Mellor and Annie Simpson got a good start but as the race went on, Last and Mellor soon secured their places at the front of the race with clear air between them whilst the ever smiling Adela Carter came through to clinch third.

Mellor’s second place was enough for the Junior to win the Series outright and set herself up well for the British Champs. Nick Craig in the Vet 40 plus showed his rivals a clean, or should that be muddy, pair of heels in beating the dominant rider in the series and overall winner, Ian Taylor, to the finish line.

In the over 50’s the favourite Chris Young repeated battles of old with Tim Gould with Young crossing the line only 19 seconds ahead of Gould. Meanwhile, in a new category in this years series, Veteran Women which has been well fought over all series, it was very happy looking Maddi Smith who took the victory in Derby and the series win as well.

In the Juniors, there was another win for the Craig family as Thomas Craig beat series winner Alfie Moses for the victory whilst in the Under 16 Boys there was the familiar sight of the champion Dan Tulett winning that race ahead of Cameron Orr with series winner Harry Yates (Hargroves Cycles) third. In the Under 16 Girls, Sophie Thackray won after taking the lead from Emily Wadsworth on the opening lap. Madeleine Gammons was third in the race but that was enough to clinch the series title. In the Under 14’s Ben Tulett, continued to go on his winning way going through the series unbeaten whilst series leader in the Under 14 girls, Poppy Wildman added another win to her long long list.
