REPORT
It was a brilliant nights racing in Otley on Wednesday evening when it seemed half of Yorkshire came out to see some great racing along with VIP’s Bernard Hinault and Christian Prudhomme from the Tour de France.
Not sure if funny handshakes are going on here but Bernard Hinault seemed to have a fun time at Otley like the rest of the 20,000 plus crowd!
The night began with the Women’s race where Lizzie Armitstead attacked on the second lap and was soon joined a few laps later by Sarah Storey. With the race splitting big time behind, the two riders who were part of the lead group at the British RR Championships, were never threatened.
With a brilliant diving attack on the final lap, Otley girl Lizzie rode away and won her ‘home’ race from Sarah with Women’s Series leader Nicola Juniper racing down the barriers and with a throw of the bike, clinched third place from Gaby Shaw.
In the Support race, three riders dominated, Nathan Draper, Joey Walker (both RST Racing and juniors) and a rider from Pedal Pushers. They broke away early on before the race was stopped after a fire engine was called out and then got stuck under the gantry. The race was restarted and the trio given a restart with 30 seconds lead. This they extended and in the sprint to the line, yet another talent from the Isle of Man, Nathan Draper, won from Joey Walker and Peter Cocker. Results of the race were not available so will update when we have them.
In the Men’s Elite Crit, with darkness now descending on Otley, it was a huge field of 120 riders plus including the likes of Adam Yates and Joshua Edmondson. The peloton didn’t hang around getting up to speed and soon the solo attacks started. Joshua Edmondson was away on his own for a few laps and then many others tried their hand at getting away.
Tom Scully (Madison Genesis), Dean Down Downing, Mathieu Boulo (Raleigh) & Adam Blythe (NFTO) had solo digs, Kristian House and Adam Yates had a go as did Mike Cuming and Tom Scully but nothing was sticking and despite a tough course, the lead group still had most of the starters in it.
It was a sprint then and the sprint trains from the men in black for Clancy and the NFTO got organised for Blythe and down the barriers out of the darkness came double Olympic champion Ed Clancy and Adam Blythe elbow to elbow and in a photo finish, the NFTO rider got the verdict from Blythe with Chris Opie in third.
A brilliant race, a brilliant crowd and a brilliant evening as always in Otley. Next stop for them is the Tour de France!
Ed Clancy, Adam Blythe and Chris Opie waste some perfectly good champagne on us photographers!
The best female road rider Britain has, Lizzie Armitstead, from Otley, breaks away in the Women’s race
Lizzie was joined by a Dame, Sarah Story, and the two rode away from the rest.
Two of Yorkshire’s finest women racers, Abby Mae Parkinson leads the peloton from Jessie Walker. Abby-Mae was 5th and first junior.
Awesome  move – Lizzie dives underneath Sarah Storey and off she goes …
