(thanks to Dot Tilbury)

Despite the recent spell of stormy weather, conditions were surprisingly good for the 287 competitors who turned out at the NSC last Tuesday night for round seven of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth league.

The born 2009 & Later class got the proceedings underway, with Eddie Dillon surging ahead of the field to take the win and maintain his unbeaten record. Cameron Hounsell edged out Jarno Davidson, Kylan Murphy and Stanley Kinnish in the dash for second, while Harrison Skillan led Lewis Cannon, Archie Mulholland and Dylan Bullock over the line to grab sixth. Joshua Cross pipped leading girl Graihagh Morgan in the tussle to fill the final place on the top ten leader board.

In the following novices race Emily Rewsin went from the gun and was never caught. Emily Cowell was a safe second and Tristan Speight beat Max Messenger in the fight for third. Abigail Cowell was a lonely fifth and Lucy Cartwright led the chasers home to secure sixth. Abigail Cullington, Alex Montgomery, Isabella Clarke and Lily-Ann Scott rounded off the top ten.

Myles Le Geyt made an early bid for glory in the born 2008 class and stayed clear to the finish. Alec Sorby got away from Ollie Eyres in the closing stages to secure the runners-up spot and Freddie Griffin came from behind to snatch fourth from Oliver Cooper, Fearne Bregazzi and T.J.Teare. Onchan’s Summer Peters was eighth closely followed by fellow chasers Deaglan Blake, Ryan Nelson, Samuel Corkill, Lennon Moore and Joel Long. Further down the field newcomer Charlie Williams did well to finish 22nd on his first outing.

In the born 2007 category Cian Howard attacked breakaway companions Orry Lund and Florence Griffin on the final lap for a clear victory. Lund held off Griffin in the rush for second and Charlie Scarffe beat Rio Kelly to the line for fourth. Jordan Carter had the advantage over Jemma Quayle in the scrap for sixth and Ben Davies took the bunch gallop for eighth ahead of Cory Corkhill and Joseph Devereau.

The born 2006 class produced one of the closest races of the night, with Cian Jackson eventually outsprinting breakaway partner Ivan Sorby to take the honours. Drystan Sewell edged out Owen Collins in the tussle for third and Zachary Dowson held off a chasing group of five riders to claim fifth. Samuel Devereau ousted leading girl Nicola Quaye in the race for sixth.

Niall Colquitt continued his winning ways in the born 2005 event, leaving the rest of the field in his wheel tracks to fight over the minor placings. Mairi Harrison outpaced Oliver Corkish, Alexander Deering and Frank Kinnish in the sprint for second, while Tyler Annis escaped from a group of six chasers to claim sixth. Chloe Dillon and Ella Griffin were the second and third girls home in seventh and eighth places respectively.

Zac Walker had to work hard for his seventh successive win in the born 2004 class. The recently crowned rider of the month for April made his customary attack from the gun but, after being reeled in by James Devereau and Dillon Dowson, had to wait until the final sprint to claim the victory. Devereau overcame Dowson in the battle for second and Nathan Slack kept top girls Kiera Prentice and Megan Boardman at bay in the rush for fourth.

Eight riders contested the finish of the born 2003 & earlier grouping, with Percy Hampton taking the chequered flag ahead of Jonty Bregazzi, Joseph Corkish, Matthew Cooil, Emma Draper, Tyler Hannay, Matthew Black and Josh Smith. Ninth placed Ross Arnold led the rest of the field in.

The racing bike events brought the evening to a close. In the combined under 8’s and under 10’s Zac Walker soloed to an easy win. Niall Colquitt spearheaded the bunch gallop for second, closely followed by Ralf Holden and James Devereau in third and fourth places. Dillon Dowson and Nathan Slack completed the top six, while Kiera Prentice lifted the girls’ prize in eighth spot.

The eight main contenders in the under 12’s race stayed together to the finish where Charlie Gibson won the sprint from James Harrison and Aaron Lund. The ever improving Tommy Skillicorn was fourth ahead of Jonty Bregazzi, Matthew Cooil, Will Corkill and Percy Hampton, while Charlie Moss was the first girl home in 11th spot.

Matthew Draper came out on top in the U/14 & U/16’s 25 lapper, outgunning Owen Dudley and Conor Davies in a hotly contested sprint finish. The race was run at a fast pace with plenty of attacks coming from the likes of Michael Moss, Will Draper, Daniel Scarffe and Adam Kelly . In the end, however, it was the winning trio who did most of the damage and they were rewarded with the top three podium positions.

Will Draper was the first U/14 in an excellent fourth place, with Dan Scarffe a very good fifth and Elizabeth Holden the best junior girl in sixth place. Eleanor Davies, who was making her comeback after a bout of glandular fever, was the top U/16 girl in 13th place and Amelia Sharpe the leading U/14 girl in 15th spot. Tara Ferguson bravely remounted after a high speed crash and did well to salvage 20th position.
