Men’s Event
Sunday morning saw Round 5 of the National time trial series took part in the small Village of Buckleberry in West Berkshire. The riders would complete a very demanding, technical and hilly circuit. With two laps to be covered giving a total mileage of 31.2 miles, the riders were also competing on the UK’s hottest day for 2014.

They would need true pace and judgement to be crowned to take the victory. The event started at 8:01 am. Riders were struggling to break into the 1 hr 13 minutes barrier. The main reason was due to the amount of climbing on the circuit. But course recorld holder, and former International road rider, Danny Axford (Artic Tacx Rt) set an incredible pace of 1:12:30 with an opening lap of 36:02 and just fading slightly on the second lap.

Meanwhile out on the course, the last of the seeded riders got underway, and it was Matt Clinton of Mike Vaughan Cycles who set a blistering pace 34:54, with Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com) starting 2 minutes behind. It was clear Clinton was on a mission, and not wanting to be caught. His pace was so rapid Bottrill, was only 30 secs faster.

The heat was on, and it was clear that both riders were going to break the old course record. At around 22 miles, Clinton caught his two minute man James Ratcliffe-Fred Williams Racing, who in turn was trying to make the podium. But with an epic first lap, fatigue set into Clinton’s legs and he started to fade slightly. But the good news for him was he held off Bottrill, for a time of 1:09:54.

Bottrill, also caught Ratcliffe, in the final two miles, and upped the pace on the second lap to take more time out of the competition. But knowing he had been pushed by Clinton, it had been a true battle between the pair. A new course record was set by over 4 minutes 1:08:36. But the best news was Bottrill clinched the National series with four out of four wins and his 8th of the season.

An exhausted Bottrill after the finish said “That was a real race, a really hard demanding circuit. With the heat, I felt look I was in an oven! I came to today’s race fatigued after a big weeks training. I knew it was going to be an hard day within the first few miles. But luckily I got stronger as the event went on. Its great to have won the series for the 4th time. Now the next goal is the National 50 miles championships. Followed by the British Championships.”
