Mike Cripps (Army Cycling Union) wins the Southampton University Road Club’s James Atherton Road Race
Report & Result – James Atherton Road Race
(report by Graham Robins – Results Sue & Tim Knight) | Sunday 13th April
After 7 laps of a lumpy circuit, a select group of five riders were left to sprint it out and it was Mike Cripps (Army Cycling Union) who had enough in the tank to ease away with a few meters to go to win the Inaugural James Atherton Road Race.
The five leaders eased away from the bunch with just over a lap to go and they all worked hard to put over one minute into them at the finish. The event was promoted and very well organised by The Southampton University Road Club and its members who were out in force all over the race course.
A lovely sunny day with warm temperatures saw a high drop out from the sixty rider field. The race course based in the village of Owslebury just north of Southampton was seven undulating laps of about ten miles making a sixty mile race.
After the initial run out, there were a couple of riders trying to attack but on each occasion it came back together. The first attack came as they approached the finish line for the first time when James Bevan (ACU) and William Griffiths (Ride 24/7) gained a gap of ten seconds. Joshua Jones (Cambridge Uni CC) had a go at getting across and the remainder of the peloton was at eighteen seconds.
When this lead came back together it was the turn of Michael Ward (Ride 24/7) and Luke Nolan (Westbury Wheelers) next to take up the lead. Their lead did go out to thirty seconds; however a lively peloton soon pulled it back again. We then waited until two laps to go for the next real move to stick when five riders built up a lead which turned out to be the decisive move.
So at two to go the five leaders, Cripps, Richard Prebble (Velosure-Giordana RT), Thomas Marshall (Velo Club Walcot), James Roe (GVC Edmond De Rothschild) and Matthew Osborn (Casp Racing). This group worked away and with just a lap to go they had built up a lead of just over a minute.
As they came into sight it was anyone’s race, Cripps found the speed and pulled out a lead of a couple of seconds as he crossed the line. At the finish Mike wanted to dedicate his win to his new baby Sebastian and wife Zoe, and he also was at pains to thank the Army Cycling Union and his sponsor Banjo Cycles for their support.
